We were originally nervous about a temple stay in December (having read reviews of temple lodgings with tiny heaters and cold rooms) but decided to take the plunge and spend a bit extra on a nice temple. Although it initially sounds quite pricey, when you take into account the fact that the price includes an AMAZING dinner, delicious breakfast, access... More

We recently toured Honshu by motorcycle on a trip organised for us by a motorbike rental company based in Akasaka, Tokyo. My wife had requested a monastery stay when planning the route and we were delighted to stay one night at Ichijoin. From the moment we arrived we were so well looked after by the monks and staff. We had... More

This is the most interesting holiday lodging that I have ever had before. The hotel was incredibly rustic yet had all the modern amenities. Including wifi and ample heating. The food was exceptional vegetarian which is amazing for me anyway. The location was also pretty awesome and I could visit all the sites quite conveniently. Fabulous.

Look for the "-" in the name on the gate, meaning "ichi" or one , as it is not marked. the accomodations and grounds are first rate. What a garden, do not miss it. If you are a group of 4 they'll serve you dinner in a private room, ours was one of the most beautiful, even though it was... More

We did a spring break trip around Japan at the end of March, and set aside a day for Koyasan. We arrived in Koyasan in the early afternoon and were able to find Ichijoin by the matching the Kanji on the lanterns outside to our reservation. The monks stored our bags and lent us umbrellas to keep us dry while... More

We stayed for two nights at Ichijoin, which was an absolutely incredible experience for all our senses. The beautiful gardens and public rooms in this temple inn are great places to sit and contemplate/meditate. All of the monks are accommodating and friendly, and go out of their way to answer any question you have. We arrived early on our first... More

What an interesting experience. This temple is really enchanting and we'll kept. Rooms are spacious and clean. We choose one with the bathroom inside but all the bathrooms in the hotel are really clean. You will sleep in a bed directly over the tatami in typical Japanese style. Some advices. You must wake-up at 6.30. At this our there's the... More

I stayed two nights with my yound adult son in June, booked through Japanican. There are many temple lodgings to choose from and I chose this one based on its central location and favourable TripAdvisor reviews. It took us most of a day to get there from Tokyo, arriving about 4pm.We were greeted by a monk who had lived in Australia called... More

This temple stay is truly an experience worth paying for (even with room rates are higher than most hotels in the area)! It is easily accessible by public transport using the bus from the funicular station. You can explore the small town on foot from the temple itself and it will not take more than half a day to see... Visited Japan in March and had herd a lot about koya-san before we went and knew we had do stay at a temple and Ichijoin was the one I booked and we weren't disappointed.
