I hesitate to repeat all of the high points from reviews already shared, but suffice it to say we had a wonderful experience at Ichijoin. This was our first trip to Japan and as such our first shukubo as well. We'd never stayed in a ryokan prior either, so the concept of combining the traditional lodging with the temple environment... Had a great time staying at Ichijoin. The monks were very friendly and spoke english well. The Monastery is located near the center of town so shops and restaurants are within walking distance. The dinner and breakfast was beautifully presented and delicious. Don't miss morning prayer service, its such a surreal experience.

This monastery is perfectly kept, our room occupied an entire wing (booked for 4 persons) and was overlooking the internal garden as you can see from the first picture of this location). The dinner served in the room is strictly vegetarian as the breakfast. The feeling of peace and of being pampered will make you desire to stay for ever.... More

We travel to Japan each year to visit our son, who lives in Tokyo. This was our first stay in a temple and we were very impressed. We were given a very warm welcome in prefect English and show to our rooms. They were basic, but comfortable with a shower and small bath. We normally prefer western style beds and... More

The temple is in a good size, small enough to feel the privacy, but big enough room and common space to feel comfortable. The garden and the ground is beautifully kept. The shoji ryori was a feast for those who love vegetarian or healthy foods. We loved the meal. The monks speak very good English and the one who took... More

The temple is gorgeous: beautiful garden, wonderful paintings in many of the ground floor rooms, extremely pleasant bedroom. The only drawback for us, westerners, is that, in spite of the fact that our room was large and very well equiped, it had no shower nor bath. Everybody is supposed to wash at the onsen, which is only open till 9... More

Ichijoin is worth taking time to visit - it takes a little while to get there, using various forms of public transport, but once you arrive the welcome is warm, the temple rooms clean and cuisine wonderful. The perfect location to focus on quiet contemplation and reflection. To recharge the batteries. It's a unique stay in beautiful surroundings.

Stayed for 1 night with a family in May. Food was one of the best vegetarian we have ever tried!! Friendly service. We booked two rooms. A VIP suite and a basic one. While the VIP was huge and had a great view, the basic room offered a pleasant experience as well. The VIP room had a bathroom ( in... More

Ichijoin offers an outstanding experience and accomodation in Koyasan. The monks and staff were nice and helpful, the buddhist meals beautiful and tasty, the bath clean and well furnished, the room traditional, big and comfortable. The morning prayer was a good experience too. I highky recommend Ichijoin!

A temple stay in Koyasan is an interesting experience. I stayed here recently and it was an interesting change. The temple is located a minutes walk from the main crossroads and bus stop in town. The monks were helpful and friendly. The rooms are large, comfortable and warm, however all common areas are not heated and are literally just above... More
