This place was amazing! I know it's a bit on the pricey side, but definitely worth it! The property itself and atmosphere was like something out of a movie; we LOVED it! The service provided by the monks was stellar. Food, amazing (made my carnivore husband suggest we try incorporating vegan meals into our diet!). Clean. Comfortable. On a side... More

We arrived to the temple around 1:00pm and dropped off our luggages. From 1-4pm we pretty much saw everything there is to see in Koyasan. It isn't a big place. Ichijoin was located at the perfect spot which is midway from both ends of Koyasan. We went east to the cemetery area first then did everything west before our check... More

This is a temple that takes guests rather than a hotel but having said that, the facilities were very much like a ryokan. We were there on a very cold day and while the corridors and public areas were cold, our tatami room was lovely and warm. We had a TV, fridge, private toilet, even wifi, although I understand that... We arrived after a tiring 7 hour rail journey and in the late afternoon sunlight Koyasan was just perfect. The same went for Ichijon which is just 3 mins walk from the nearest bus stop. You have to remember this is a temple and not a Ryokan so whist the rules may seem strict and the monks very, very formal... More

We stayed for two nights in Koyasan and luckily had booked ahead at Ichijoin. Although we had opted for the cheapest room type it was spacious and elegant. The room had a shared bathroom and toilets (separate male and female) but you only share it with three other rooms and I never met someone else there. Mornings start early with... More

We stayed at the Ichijo-in for one night in Mt. Koya. The accommodation is a working monastery, and your hosts are the monks. We arrived late morning, and took the bus from the station into town. The helpful guide at the station told us which stop to get off at for the Ichijo-in. A word to the wise, there is... More

What a pleasant surprise! This Buddhist temple/hotel was not only very beautiful and comfortable accommodations but also a wonderful cultural experience. It was slightly difficult to find as it was only signed in Japanese (I do not speak or read Japanese). We were greeted by an apprentice monk who spoke fluent English and introduced us to the temple/hotel and our... More

We arrived in the afternoon after a morning snowfall so Koyosan was very picturesque. The stay in the monastery was superb, and our room overlooked the garden and pond. There was tea on arrival and the vegetarian dinner was prepared in exquisite detail, very tasty. The hot bath after an evening walk was superb. The morning prayers was a great... More

Mt Koya is a beautiful place which I would highly recommend going to. Ichijoin definitely complimented the beautiful location. The two of us booked the cheapest room as we are students and were expecting a small, cosy and simple room. We were pleasantly surprised by the large space, cleanliness, amenities and even by the on-suite bathroom! The temple has a... More

I was expecting something a bit more ascetic for a Buddhist temple but from the moment one of the monks came out to greet us in perfectly fluent English I knew things weren't quite what they seemed. We arrived just as snow was beginning to fall in early January. The temple is a short jaunt from the Koyasan town center... More
