This temple stay is truly an experience worth paying for (even with room rates are higher than most hotels in the area)! It is easily accessible by public transport using the bus from the funicular station. You can explore the small town on foot from the temple itself and it will not take more than half a day to see... Visited Japan in March and had herd a lot about koya-san before we went and knew we had do stay at a temple and Ichijoin was the one I booked and we weren't disappointed. A stunning place to stay, with welcoming monks one of which came and had a good chat with us in perfect English (once we got home... More

During our recent trip to Japan we opted to visit Koyasan and experience a stay in a temple. Having researched the options in Koyasan, we opted to stay at Ichijo-in and would recommend the Shukubo to anyone looking for the temple experience. Booked through the Koyasan Shukubo office, the reservation process was straightforward and my dietary requirements were registered with... More

This temple has a lot of great points: the food was amazing, the monks are efficient (remember they are not service staff), the onsen is nice, the room very traditional and the morning prayers are interesting. Some of the monks had an excellent command of English, which was useful to understand proceedings at the temple. They were polite and efficient.... More

This was our first temple stay, so we found everything fascinating from the style of the room through to the morning ceremony. To be honest we struggled with the food - vegan with no onions or garlic, but we had a go! The only problem there was the monks serving it were in quite a rush, so had no time... More

This place was amazing! I know it's a bit on the pricey side, but definitely worth it! The property itself and atmosphere was like something out of a movie; we LOVED it! The service provided by the monks was stellar. Food, amazing (made my carnivore husband suggest we try incorporating vegan meals into our diet!). Clean. Comfortable. On a side... More

We arrived to the temple around 1:00pm and dropped off our luggages. From 1-4pm we pretty much saw everything there is to see in Koyasan. It isn't a big place. Ichijoin was located at the perfect spot which is midway from both ends of Koyasan. We went east to the cemetery area first then did everything west before our check... More

This is a temple that takes guests rather than a hotel but having said that, the facilities were very much like a ryokan. We were there on a very cold day and while the corridors and public areas were cold, our tatami room was lovely and warm. We had a TV, fridge, private toilet, even wifi, although I understand that... We arrived after a tiring 7 hour rail journey and in the late afternoon sunlight Koyasan was just perfect. The same went for Ichijon which is just 3 mins walk from the nearest bus stop. You have to remember this is a temple and not a Ryokan so whist the rules may seem strict and the monks very, very formal... More

We stayed for two nights in Koyasan and luckily had booked ahead at Ichijoin. Although we had opted for the cheapest room type it was spacious and elegant. The room had a shared bathroom and toilets (separate male and female) but you only share it with three other rooms and I never met someone else there. Mornings start early with... More
