We were looking for a really traditional Japanese Ryokan / Onsen experience, and we found it. Chojukan place was built in the 1870s, as a place along the Mikunikaido foot-highway for Tokyo folks to come out and relax, and it is gorgeous inside.  It has several large very traditional indoor onsen bathing areas, and one outdoor "rotenburo" all of which... This a really old building with very nice food and service. There is at least 1 staff who can communicate well in English, so if you do not speak a single word of Japanese, you can still come. On the other hand, this place got osen that both men and women can use together, so this is a very special... More

The isolated location and the architecture reminds you of life a hundred years ago. The last stay before you are traversing the mountain pass, by foot. Ideal location for a trek in the beautiful mountain area in late spring to early autumn. However, this is not the standard country inn. Our tatami mat room had a second room with a... More

This has to be my most favorite Onsen ryokan in all of Japan. It is old but very charming. You get to experience what a traditional ryokan is like in Japan. It's surrounded by the mountains, scenery is beautiful in winter. I'm in love with its outdoor onsen, which is so romantic when it snows. Staff speaks v little English... More

I have stayed in more than 25 ryokans in Japan, most of them in the top luxury class range. I would rate Chojukan as one of the highest and best experiences. Getting there is a pain especially when you are taking public transport from Tokyo. There are plenty of transfers, so pack light - you don't want to be lugging... More

I stayed at Chojukan Hoshi onsen on 8 Nov 2014 for one night. However, just only one night here would be suffice to assure that this is one of best ryokan and onsen in Japan. The historical building and traditional onsen, including its secluded location, make this place even more charming. You will feel like you have live in a... More

Recommended this place by a person who has stayed more than 150 Onsen Ryokan (accommodation with hot spring) in Japan. He ranked this place No.1 out of 150. Very traditional accommodation. Buildings are aged, but in a good way. Protected as a cultural heritage. The 3 onsens (hotsprings) are open almost 24 hours (except cleaning time for about 1 hour).... More

If you want to feel and experiment Japanese traditional Onsen-ryokan style, I strongly recommend this Chojukan in Gunma prefecture. Indeed this spot is bit far from Tokyo or Narita Air port(you need to get Shin-kan-sen and local bus), but this is why they can keep the atmosphere of "secret place". Of course the quality of their springs is one of... More

Wow. My wife and I loved the excellent food, beautifulmrooms, rustic hot springs (including an unforgettable one under the stars) allowing for mixed and single-sex bathing, and the wonderfully secluded locale.

My boyfriend and I visited in early May 2013 and thoroughly enjoyed our one night stay. The journey is quite straightforward from Jomokogen train station, we asked for advice at the tourist office and a very kind man provided us with maps and the bus timetables. We actually got a taxi after the first bus because of a long wait... More
