Maruken Sanso is a fantastic choice for a stay in Nozawa Onsen, or anywhere in Japan for that matter. The ryokan is incredibly well located, less than a minute walk to the main ski lifts, just a few minutes from town and not far from some public onsens. However, the onsen in the basement is incredibly relaxing and you will... More

Loved our 6 night stay here in February. Close to the Nagasaka Gondola and only a short walk from the main street of the Village. We found Maruken Sanso to be what we would consider to be a true Japanese experience and Nobuko made us feel right at home. It is all pretty basic but can not be faulted.

Maruken Sanso is about as close to the Nagasaka Gondola as you can get on a budget. The rooms were reasonably priced, but the real value was when we ate dinner in one night! We wished we had eaten in every other night of our stay, the food was delicious and we even got to try some home-made umeshu (plum... More

Maruken Sanso is pretty hard to write a summary about as its down sides were often also its strong points. It screams everything Japanese and has a distincively unique feel about it compared to your everyday accommodation that the rest of the western world offers. We travelled with a group of 12 and stayed here for 7 nights. I believe... More

This was our third visit to Nozawa, where finding family accommodation has always been tricky. For value for money, Maruken is our favourite option so far. Our combined Western/Japanese room was a great size for Japan, nicely decorated and spotlessly clean. Heating was new, quiet and able to be controlled by us. The room included a decent sized toilet and... More

My husband and I stayed here for four nights. The room was very small but had its own basin and toilet. It was on the third floor: great for views over the village, but a long way down to breakfast, the ski room and the cute in house onsen. Make sure you don't leave anything behind in your room when... Friendly transfer service on arrival & departure by host (Mr) Mamoru. Maruken-Sanso is VERY close to the main gondola and the main street. No showers though, although they have their own (post ski) onsen - which I now MUCH prefer than a sauna. Great restaurant recomendations - but you MUST eat in at least one night. (Mrs) Nabuko's English is... More

This delightful lodge with lovely owners - Nabuko and Mamoru - made our first ski trip to Japan much easier than expected. They speak enough English to communicate everything we needed, and were very helpful pointing out restaurants, how to get lift tickets, and even organising a taxi transfer from Narita airport (a tip for traveller - this is the... We spend 3 nights at Maruken Sanso. We had the Super Deluxe room, which was very clean with 2 western beds and 1 Japanese style bed. Too bad that you don't have a shower in your room, but that is a bit common in Japan I believe... After a long day of skiing we used the "onsen" in the basement... More

We found this lodge by chance and were very happy with it. Location is one of the best in Nozawa Onsen - equidistant from restaurants, onsens and bars (4mins) and main gondola (3 mins). You can leave hire ski/snowbaord gear at the Gondola, so this 3 min walk is very easy. The owners - Mamoru and Nobuko - are extremely... More
