Ryokan Sakaya is the arguably the best property in town. The highlight of the hotel has to be the public onsen, hands down the best in town and easily beat any spa that I have been to...it's HUGE. each male and female have an open air onsen and a sauna room, there's also a nice family bath that you can... It's been a few years since we spent a week staying at some of the most beautiful ryokans in Japan, and with no snow on the West Coast of the US, we and our friends were anxious to try Japanese powder, so in late February we went to Nozawa Olsen to warm up on their slopes before heading up to... This Ryokan was the perfect experience for our family of four. The service was superb, the food magnificent and the accommodation lovely. The sense of it was of a very exclusive opportunity and the care and attention we received could not have been better. An absolute highlight of our trip to Japan and we thoroughly recommend this place. A special... More

We have just had a week at this gorgeous ryokan. It is our second stay here and was even better than the last time. We had a deluxe traditional room with futons this time which was huge and very comfortable. Last year we had the western room which was quite small. I recommend opting for a traditional Japanese room as... More

Ok, so I'd give it 4.5 stars. It's better than very good, but not (quite) up to the standard of say, the Marriott Grand Hyatt or similar. However, its a wonderful place to stay, particularly if you want to experience genuine Japanese culture and service. Staff are extremely helpful and courteous, and everything you could want is provided; a wonderful... More

Came here with the kids in December to celebrate Christmas. We reached the little town of Nozawa onsen at 5-6pm but it was pitch black by then. We took a taxi from the local train station to sakaya onsen (takes around 15mins), however as we learnt on the ride home it was easier to take the bus (only 3 mins... More

The wife and I stayed for 3 nights in mid january. Check-in was a breeze. English is spoken well by a few staff members, but overall communication is not a issue. The staff provides you a very good overview of the property and the town. Our room was on the 6th floor. We had 2 single beds setup instead of... More

The glowing reviews are true. It's intimate and the staff are very attentive and warm. Full of nice little touches like encouraging you to wear kimonos to meals and free snow boots to wear. The Onsen was a delight we even used it at 5am on the morning of our departure. In future I would not have prepaid for all... More

Arrived January 15th on the night of the fire festival. Check in was flawless and the staff could not help us enough during our stay. Loved the Japanese style breakfasts. Nozawa-onsen powder was turned on and we skied hard. The Onsens were much appreciated apres ski. The town itself is full of history and RyokanSakaya is centrally located. Rooms were... More

Arrived mid-December 2014, the day after a whopping 1m drop of fresh powder. Had forwarded our luggage via Ta-Q-Bin from Narita so we could travel unencumbered. JR Narita Express to Tokyo (57m), Nagano Shinkansen to Nagano (1h40m), Shinetsu Main Line to Kamisakai (1h15m) and a 5 minute taxi to Sakaya. Check in was effortless, the staff understand varying levels of... More
