Masuya Ryokan is the real thing, an old wooden Ryokan hotel that has survived the ages. It is not well-maintained though, some windows are missing, some floors are kind of iffy, and there are large hornet nests near the roofline. Glass panes rattle with the slightest breeze as there's no putty in them. No wi-fi or much of any other... More

I have stayed at this ryokan twice. It is run by a wonderful family who always make us feel very welcome. It is historically a well known ryokan. It is with out a doubt very peaceful and relaxing. The hamlet, of maybe 20 houses, is at the end of the road, a couple of km from the trailheads for some mountain hikes. It's very quiet, and although the size of some of the houses and ryokans suggest former glory, there's very little going on. However maybe that's just what you need! This Meiji-era hotel is about a 20-minute taxi ride from Ueda station in Nagano. The hotel is old and has no central heating, so it's very cold in the common areas. The staff are friendly and helpful, but if you don't speak Japanese, communication will be difficult. The food was average. The bath was OK.
