Nice traditional house just a bit off the town centre so it is quiet and serene yet you are only a 5-minute walk away. It snowed during our stay but there was a heater and electric mat to keep the room warm at night. The dining room was well-heated during both breakfast and dinner. Both meals were absolutely wonderful with... More

The host is the 8th generation, the house is historical heritage with very clean and comfort rooms, the atmosphere is warm and simple, the hostess and host are very nice and both can speak english. They introduced the history of the house and Shiragawa. Having meals around the hearth and talk with each other is really traditional and enjoyable. The... More

Great experience The hosts are great! Unlike previous reviews I read I did not find the hostess unwelcoming. She was just a bit more reserved. Still very friendly. Gave us some options on what to do until dinner. Dinner was incredible! The house itself is just really cool to sleep in. You can hear some of the frog and cricket... More

This is the closest it comes to be received at home as a Japanese family's guest. It does not offer the service of a Ryokan or a hotel. The rooms and the facilities are basic but appropriate to the setting in a traditional guest house. The lovely hosts are wonderfully welcoming and their meals (breakfast and dinner) are tasty and very... More

It is good that the inn is on the edge of the village, away from the day-trippers' traffic. Apart from that, the experience was average as the hospitality was a bit underwhelming. Price / quality was also not as good as what we have been experiencing in this part of Japan. This was disappointing, particularly given the rural setting and... More

We spend a night at this ryokan, gassho house. It is located at the end of the village, quite a bit far from the center of the town. I think this remote location of the house is quite an advantage of this ryokan. So, we stay in a quiet area. The view is quite better. Our bedroom is just next... More

It was my first time not staying in a formal hotel/ryokan therefore, the experience was good for me. I think the room looked a bit shabby but the futon was clean and the eating area was very interesting. The home made food (both breakfast and dinner) was delicious and tasted very fresh. There was some mechanic outside the room and... More

We stayed here for 1 night in June. The accomodation and food were good, as was the location - a little further away but very quiet and close to fields etc. The welcome was not hugely warm - yes language could be an issue, but a smile goes a long way and crosses language barriers. A nice town - worth... More

I shan't add to what has already been said (which is largely true) except to say: - This is much like staying in someone's (albeit traditional and really nice) house in Japan. So, if you haven't done that much you'll find it amazing. If you have, it's still great but perhaps the price tag includes that experience. - It's really... More

Shimizu is rather far from the bus stop, but it definitely has the best view! The japan alps on your doorstep. Dinner was okay and the futon was comfy, probably the thickest futon we had so far. Because its quite isolated from the rest of the village, we even met a wild fox wander from nearby forest. However, we didnt... More
