Its now called Tharangambadi....but it was a Dutch Colony called Tranquebar. Hardly anyone has heard of this place but if you are in South India, near Pondy or Tangore, do go visit. Its a peaceful haven ,worth spending a day or two, just to unwind, before moving on. We did not get rooms at the main Hotel, called the Bunglow... More

I have to this area many times and I love the area for it's peace and simplicity. The Gate House is a much better choice for me than the Bungalow. It is small; 4 rooms I think. So it's never going to be crowded. It has a small pool that is more than adequate. The rooms are not on the... More

This is a really pleasant hotel in a cozy sleepy village. We only stayed there one night, but would have liked to stay there longer. The hotel is located just inside of the town gate and has a beautiful garden and is tastefully renovated with only 6 rooms. We had a room on the first floor with a veranda from... More

It is a value for money BB. This property does not have a restaurant or even a pantry. It is located a furlong away from the main hotel - Bungalow on the beach so not advisable for travelers with kids or elders. Also during the night it gets shady and walking in the dark street is dicey though no crime... More

We fell in love with the sleepy old town of Tranquebar with its Danish fort, its old buildings, the sea and it seemed like it was literally frozen in time for many centuries now. The Gate House in particular is one of the four buildings which the Neemrana Group has taken over and renovated and is really quaint and beautiful.... More

This is a big old house with 6 rooms converted to a hotel. We stayed here for one night, booked three rooms and they were named Chidambaram, Swamimallai, Tanjore....This is one of the best heritage hotel that we have visited in south India. You go back to 1900s with all those old pictures, pictures of all Maharajas, old styled long... More

The Gate House is one of 4 places managed by Neemrana Hotels within the sleepy walled Danish colonial town of Tranquebar. The rooms at the Gate House are organized around a pebble courtyard ringed by wooden pillars. The open roof in the courtyard reduces midday heat & acts like an atrium, naturally circulating the air. The stained wood furnishings were... More

We stayed at the Gate House for 1 night after 3 nights at the Bungalow on the Beach (BoB). Our party stayed in 3 rooms - the front two and the one accessible through the back garden. The walled gardens are beautiful and the pool is big and super clean. The children loved playing ball in the gardens and my... More

If you've gone through my earlier reviews of Hotel Tamil Nadu & the Bungalow on the Beach, you would have noted that I reserved my top marks to The Gate House. This 'hotel' is again a refurbished heritage property. The main difference with its bigger sister property is that while the BoB has been restored to appear like a European... More
