A lovely little family run ryokan. The owner whisked us up to the Snow Monkey park and even collected us afterwards as we were running a little bit late. He then gave us useful advice for our onward journey the following day. The evening meal was served in a private room downstairs and the food was excellent. They were able... More

Great place to spend a few days to visit the snow monkeys. The owner drives guests to the start of the walk in and will collect you afterwards if you give him a call on your mobile.. Breakfasts very good. There is a hot pool which guests can use any time. Location is about 10 minutes walk from the main... More

We only had one night stay at Shimaya and wished we stayed just a bit longer. They family runned ryokan has a great view of the town and they are so welcoming and accommodating. One things to note, the outdoor hot spring is a short ride away. But the indoor hot spring was really nice and they will let you... More

Trips with my group of friends always includes various accomodations from luxurious ( to relax and recoup from long plane rides ) to places that we can enjoy the local customs and people we travel so far to experience. My Japanese friends told me not to miss out on the Ryokan experience ( I did my first time to Japan... More

Since arriving back in the UK I've realised how this stay was the biggest highlight of my travels around japan. The area is stunning, with great views from the room of the village and mountains. There's lots to see and do, especially seeing the snow monkeys. You can get a free lift from the owners. They are great and can't... More

From the moment you arrive to the moment you leave, your treated like apart of the family. The owner drove us to the snow monkeys and let us borrow snow boots, asked if we would like to be picked up. Anything they could do to make us feel comfortable they did. I can not suggest this place enough, Japanese Ryokan... More

We stayed at Shimaya Ryokan in September 2013 for two nights as part of our visit to Yudanake. Yudanake itself is a lovely town in itself and the Ryokan does the town complete justice. Its a relatively simple accomodation but the service provided by our hosts was outstanding. The room was comfortable in a Japanese style, and I enjoyed having... More

This inn is rather unprepossessing in appearance and the accommodation no more than average. However the owners are extremely helpful and the food is amongst the best we tasted anywhere in Japan. Definitely worth a visit! The Onsen has a mgnificent view and is not to be missed!

If you like traditional Japanese hotel with hot spring, Shimaya is a good one to stay. The owners, wife and husband were very friendly and helpful. They provided tips of where to eat and what to do in the region to the guests. The hot spring in the hotel was a plus especially after a long day of sightseen activities.... More

Actual accommodation is very Japanese style, which is charming but not terribly comfortable. However, after a taxi, a plane and three trains, I slept like a baby on the futon that was ready for me when I got there. I arrived in the evening and the owner picked me up from the train station, dropped off and picked up at... More
