We stayed only one night here but wish we could have had longer. We arrived in the evening after a walk from the train station in the rain, at about 6pm. As soon as we got there we were shown our room (which had private toilet facilities) and had a full traditional Japanese dinner on the table by 7pm, which... More

The hotel has been in the family for generations, and although it's a little worn round the edges, it's a great little royken where the staff couldn't be more helpful. Highlights include: reasonable price, excellent breakfast, the piano at breakfast time, the juke box in the breakfast room, the free transfer to the snow monkey park, and the onsen -... More

My wife and my 1year old baby spent 2 nights here and it was money well spent. The room was big enough for the 3 of us. The good thing about a traditional Japanese room is that the kiddo can walk around as there is ample space. Our room came with private bathroom and toilet. It also has a small... More

We loved staying here. The rooms were lovely and warm - a real ryokan experience. The entire family did all they could to make our trip as smooth as possible including recommending restaurants, driving us to the snow monkey park and taking us down to the train station when we left. Would highly recommend the public bath behind the ryokan.

A smiling happy couple greeted us at this family run establishment. On arrival it was clear that this is a family oriented stop over on the way to see the famous monkey park - lots of letters from children/family's all over Europe and beyond thanking 'mine hosts' On offer is an outdoor hot tub and if your thing is outdoor... Very nice location to go to the monkey park. The tenant was very helpful and drove us to the park because we did not have much time. The room was nice and confortable, in a traditional japanese style. Except for the hot bath that was really too hot to bear, the hotel was good.

I'd go along with the laudatory comments in the other reviews. We had a superb time. Mr and Mrs Yumoto were kind and helpful. We hugely enjoyed the onsen, especially the one outdoors, and seeing the snow monkeys. And hiking in the mountains was great too.

We were scheduled to stay here for one night as we were due to go to the snow monkey park the next morning. Mr and Mrs Yumoto were very welcoming to this traditional hotel. The decor was great with lots of pictures of snow monkeys. The other reports are correct and we were kindly given a lift up to the snow... More

Excellent service. The lovely couple allowed us to keep our bags at the ryokan while walking around the town and visiting the monkey reserve. We were also offered a free ride to the reserve and access to a local, private hot spring. Highly recommend to all travelers heading to Nagano.

Of the many fantastic experiences in japan during our 5 week visit, staying at the Shimaya Ryokan was a highlight. The kind, friendly, helpful service provided by our hosts was exceptional. Mr Yumoto drove us to the nearby outdoor onset, out to the snow monkey park, provided umbrellas and cold weather gear. A hearty breakfast, clean comfortable Ryokan and a... More
