Stayed a night at this pleasant little ryokan. The owners go out of their way to make you feel comfortable. They even sent us back and forth when needed. The room with 3 futons for 2 adults and a child was spacious and clean. Overall, we had a pleasant stay and will definitely recommend this place!

宿主の方がお客さんひとりひとりを気にかけてくれて、不慣れな土地であるのにも関わらず安心します。 Master was well communicating with tourist the whole time so we could feel safe and comforts during stay even we don't know much about a town. 宿主さんが、ノープランで着てしまった私たちにオススメの観光スポットを教えてくださり、翌日の旅程がスムーズに運びました。小布施とてもいいところでした、ありがとうございました! if you had not decieded where to go yet,its better to ask to Master.he knows good sightseeing spots and helpful. 宿泊者は殆どが外国人で、日本人は私ただけのようでした。 it seemed that we were only japanese in the hotel. 館内は外国人観光客の置いていった記念品やポスターなどあり、とてもアットホームな空間でした。... This is a SIMPLE not luxurious ryokan hotel . Although the communal areas appear a little grubby when you first walk in and it doesn't look particularly attractive from the outside, the rooms themselves are fine, if a little dated. The couple that run the Shimaya make your visit and add a lot of warmth to your stay. The wife... More

As everyone else has already commented what sets the Shimaya apart from the others is the wonderful friendly service they provide. From the moment we arrived we were greeted with a warm welcome and made to feel at home. Nothing is too much trouble. Would definitely recommend it over a large impersonal chain hotel.

This is the 2nd I have stayed here. There first with my family and this time with a group of 18 people. The service was exceptional from offering to pick us up at the train station, driving us to the monkey park, arranging a place for lunch, arranging the onsen, the option of a beautiful traditional breakfast. The traditional rooms... More

Based on past reviews of this ryokan, Shimaya, on Trip Advisor we booked our stay through booking.com, and the host was very prompt in confirming our reservation, providing us directions on how to get to Shimaya by train and subway and gave a very warm welcome when we arrived in the evening. Not knowing what restaurants were open that night... More

Let me start off by saying that I would give this 3.5 stars if I could. But that is not an option, so I went with 3. After reading all of the rave reviews online we thought we'd give this play a try, even though the cost of a room for myself and my boyfriend was $200 US dollars for... More

The extraordinary attentiveness by the genial proprietor included his picking up my son and me at the train station late in the evening, his oversight of the first-rate Japanese (or western) breakfast -- repairing the machine providing individually ground and brewed coffee drinks when the machine faltered at breakfast time, and his driving us to the snow monkey preserve --... We stayed only one night here but wish we could have had longer. We arrived in the evening after a walk from the train station in the rain, at about 6pm. As soon as we got there we were shown our room (which had private toilet facilities) and had a full traditional Japanese dinner on the table by 7pm, which... More

The hotel has been in the family for generations, and although it's a little worn round the edges, it's a great little royken where the staff couldn't be more helpful. Highlights include: reasonable price, excellent breakfast, the piano at breakfast time, the juke box in the breakfast room, the free transfer to the snow monkey park, and the onsen -... More
