We had a great experience in Shimaya Ryokan. You will find international and as well as locals enjoying the hot-spring baths. Spacious bedrooms, in a classical Japanese fashion. The ryokan offers the possibility to rent outdoor hot-spring baths, something that I strongly recommend. Yudanaka snow monkeys are just a few minutes away by car. WIFI is free and Japanese brealfast... More

Best dinner - an assortment of grilled meat and vegi, seafood, etc Private outdoor onsen - its about 300 yen, ($3 USD) Drives and picks you up from the Monkey park. - (Free) Nicest staff. BTW. Breakfast was average, not the best, but the dinner, onsen and monkey park pickup/dropoff made it ten times better. I only needed 1 day... More

Shimaya is a classic Japanese Ryokan. In North American parlance, we would call it a "Mom & Pop" or B&B. The hotel is small and family run, with solicitous (sometimes overly so for us city dwellers!) innkeepers. The ryokan hosts two traditional onsen, divided into male/female, according to western tastes. The male/female sign is changed from day to day, so... More

Had a fantastic time at the Shimaya Ryokan! If you plan on visiting the area you must go there. Family run ryokan with a lovely vibe. Rooms were good size and comfortable. Mr Yumoto and his wife drove us to the snow monkey park and back when we desired, and prepared a delicious western style breakfast for us in the... More

Shimaya Ryokan was our the best accommodation in Japan. Our room was very big, clean and in Japanese style. It's very convenient to have an opportunity to take a bath in onsen which is on the first floor. In Shimaya we had the best Japanese breakfast in our 3 weeks trip. We could highly recommended this place for globetrotters and... More

Shimaya was truly my favourite place to stay in japan. Mr and Mrs Yumoto were exceptional hosts. We stayed in an amazing room, relaxed in the hot spring and were even driven to the snow monkey park in time for opening. Truly exceptional, can’t wait to go back again.

This was our second stay at Shimaya Ryokan, the first time was in late 2008 which left us with such wonderful memories that we chose to stay here again. The Snow Monkey park is a very enjoyable excursion and this time it actually snowed! Mr Yumoto took care of all transport to and from the park and even picked us... More

My husband and I stayed along with some friends for several nights in February. The owners exceeded expectations with their courtesy, attention to detail, knowledge of the area , particularly the snow monkey park. Always willing to drive us wherever we needed to go. The room was clean and cosy. home cooked breakfast was greatly appreciated . Enjoyed an excellent... More

I particularly love the cozy room. Its tatami floor has nice smell of padi and some sort of natural wooden smell. I like the little detail thing from the ryokan e.g. 60's telephone in the room, bath room and toilet are seperate, hot water supply in the room, and the relaxing hot spring, highly recommended. Last but not least, the... More

My girlfriend and I stayed here for one night in early January, and our stay was absolutely superb. When we got there, they checked us in promptly (Mrs. Yumoto was willing to speak in English, even though I am fluent in Japanese, so that my girlfriend could understand). Our room was well equipped and comfortable. The one thing we noticed... More
