We only were able to stay for one night. I found our hosts to be the most friendly and caring with a brillian service. We were picked up at the train settled into our accommodation and then wisked to the Monkey Park. We called the Shimaya host and he was waiting for us to take back to the ryokan. Great... More

I have stayed her twice and enjoyed it very much both times. Room: The bedding is very comfortable and the rooms are always warm. There is hot water and tea waiting for you. The rooms are clean and very nice. Our room had an awkward toilet and the in-room bath tub could have done with some updating but there really... More

My favourite memory from my trip to Japan was taking the train from Tokyo to Nagano then Nagano to Yudanaka -arriving by train in the small moutain village with thick white snow covering everything was amazing! The helpful info centre staff checked me in to the Shimaya Ryokan.Mr and Mrs Shimaya were wonderful hosts, they have been running the hotel... More

My fiancé and I stayed at Shimaya for two nights out of a 10 day trip to Japan and it was our favorite place by far! Our hosts were as kind and helpful as one could possibly hope for, from driving us to and from the monkey park every day to suggesting delicious places to eat! We felt very welcome... More

We stayed here for 2 nights as part of a trip around Japan in April and it was great and a real experience as it was a typical japanese guest house with futons on the floor. The couple who own it were absolutely charming and they drove us to the monkey sanctuary and back to the station. Other than the... More

Some parts of the hotel itself are a little bit shabby, but it's not so bad. Some parts, such as the big private onsen room (which you can book in advance every day, for free) are new and very nice. However, what makes the place special is that the owners are extremely friendly and helpful, and would do whatever they... More

Mr. and Mrs. Yumoto and Shimaya Ryokan exemplify Japanese hospitality. It was our favorite place to stay during our 22 days in Japan, and we would solidly recommend it for anyone looking for a genuine, safe, fascinating place to stay.

I have never experienced the customer service I did at Shimaya. Mr. Yumoto and his wife were absolutely amazing. They loaned us rubber boots and drove us to the entrance of the Monkey Park. They went above and beyond to get to know us and what we were interested in doing while we were visiting. Mr. Yumoto even went the... More

Stayed there last January. Lovely place to stay - they lent us snowshoes, drove us to the monkey park and to the station when we are leaving. Great food with warm hospitality. Their keepsakes still adorn our suitcases. We remember our time in Shimaya quite fondly.

I have stayed at many hostels, hotels and ryokans while traveling and living in Japan but never have I stayed in one as incredible as Shimaya Ryokan. The husband and wife that own Shimaya are very sweet and dedicate themselves completely to making your stay perfect. The room was very spacious and had its own personal heater and bathroom. In...
