I don't normally write reviews, but we just had such a wonderful couple of days here. The owners are so friendly, and were happy to drive us to see the Snow monkeys and pick up, met some other people staying who had just as much fun as us. Love the traditional accommodation, and Sushi shop recommended was out of this... More

Our party of 4 stayed here for 2 nights, it was a wonderful experience. The owners were extremely helpful and attentive, and a wealth of knowledge. Our room was spacious with private bathroom on 3rd floor, it was huge for Japanese standards and there were plenty of extra futons on feather doonas to soften the Japanese way of sleeping. I... I feel weird writing this after all the good reviews but I was really disappointed with my stay here. On arrival the manager was friendly and polite. However I felt I was somewhat of a nuisance to him after a while. On booking I had been told he would transport me to the Snow Monkey Park. I was asked what... More

This was our first experience of a traditional ryoken, sleeping on a mattress on the floor etc and it was wonderful. In terms of décor the property is perhaps in need of some freshening up, however this was greatly outweighed by the wonderful welcome and attentive service. The room was large; tea and a flask of hot water were provided;... More

It felt like a homestay, like part of the family. All staff were so polite, friendly, helpful, offered advice, spoke English, helped with our bags, took us to and from the snowmonkey park, saki breweries, train, breakfast was amazing and fresh, sheets and bedding was comfortable and fresh in a traditional style private room on futon. These people are beautiful... More

We were on a backpacking trip and wanted the Ryokan experience without the price tag. We decided to spend 2 nights at Shimaya and it was probably the best decision we made in our 2 weeks in Japan. We had a "3 person mountain view room" which was basic but in a traditional way. We really enjoyed wearing around our... More

We stayed for two nights here in February 2015. I don't think I've ever been in such a helpfull B&B. From giving us information, lifts to and from the monkey park, providing welly boots. I even borrowed a hat & gloves because I misplaced mine. We were walking to the saki museum and Mr Yumoto stopped and again very kindly... More

Not knowing what to expect from a ryokan, we were a clean slate. We picked this one for the proximity to the train station and the reported friendliness of the owners, plus their willingness to pick us up and drop us off at the train station and the snow monkey park ... in fact their guests are their whole reason... Stayed at this ryokan in Dec 2014 and in Feb 2015, the owner Mr. Yumoto san goes above and beyond to ensure your stay at his ryokan is as pleasant as possible, he takes the trouble to recommend places to eat and places to visit in around the Yamanouchi area. As I booked the room with hot dinner package, the... More

One of our first places we stayed at in Japan and the perfect place to start to see Japanese culture at it's best. Mr Yumoto was extremely helpful with driving us to/from the Monkey Park and even to the station when we were ready to leave! And the private onsen is definitely worth booking and the quick walk. Will definitely... More
