An economical Ryokan, the hosts are very nice and helpful. Both western and Japanese breakfasts were good. The owner drove us to the train station and to the monkeys park, (he would have picked us up but we enjoyed the walk back to Shimaya). All rooms have a shared bath room on the floor but that was not a problem.... More

Perhaps we’re missing something, but I fail to see what there is to recommend. Not just Shimaya, but the town of Yadanaka. Even by rural Japanese standards, it’s rubbish – the Japanese countryside at its most useless. Apart from the snow monkey park (jigokudani), there is absolutely nothing at all to do or see in this run-down little town. Shimaya... More

Thank you very much for staying with us. On the one hand we recommend Shiga-Kogen to guests "by car" for skiing. On the other hand. we advise staying hotel near Yudanaka Station to guests "by train" for visit Snow Monkey Park. In any case we were very sorry. More

I read this hotel has common kitchen use so I booked and brought vegs and meat. Actually the kitchen is just a open lavatory and set some microwaves and pot. The information causes misunderstanding for backpackers who wants to cook by own. The room is very standard and old Japanese facility. The owner looks busy to talk with expats in... More

The facilities are a little worn off, but the hospitality of the owners compensate for everything. I totally recommend this place. Food was good, both western and Japanese breakfasts. Owner drove us to the train station and to monkeys park.

The family running the ryokan is very friendly and helpful and is able to speak a little English. The rooms are nice and clean and very cosy and comfortable. There is a free ride to and back from the Monkey Park and you just have to arrange with the owner. We actually lost our glasses during our stay there and... More

My husband and I booked this hotel and stayed in room with 3 futon beds. (We traveled with a toddler.) The room was nice. It is a traditional Japanese style, which includes tatami mats, etc. There is a small "sun room" type area just off of the tatami mat that is separated by rice paper doors. The toilet is off... Hotel was lovely but what makes this hotel is the owners. They are very hospitable and will go more than out of their way to help. They voluntarily gave us a lift to and from the monkey park and to the train station - free of charge. During our travels, we visited 11 different locations (9 in Japan) and the... More

Based on reviews, we expected a truly stellar ryokan. We were quite surprised, then, when we arrived to this 1960's ugly building, only to find the inside was equally shabby. The rugs looked they have been changed (and perhaps not well cleaned) since the building was built. The lobby was cluttered with papers, shoes, and in general disarray. The hallways... More

The host and his family pick us up at the station, sent us to the Monkey Park and sent us off at the station. They were very friendly and helpful. Rooms are large and comfortable. Breakfast was excellent - choice of Japanese and Western. Strong WiFi in my room. Great way to experience Japanese hospitality in a ryokan.

We loved our stay at Shimano Ryokan and we would love Togo back. The host was so generous, taking us to the monkey park also making sure we were able to experience the hot pool. Breakfast each morning was a real treat with freshly cooked western breakfast. Many other guests took the Japanese breakfast which was more fish and also... More
