we stayed at the Emerald Bay Hotel in November 2007 and found it to be a very nice clean and pleasant hotel. we are therefor shocked to hear to of its fall from grace. At the time when we were there, there was talk of it being taken over by an outsider, going by the previews for this year and the... more

After reading some very uncomplimentary reviews of this hotel we were delighted to find that the hotel, the food and the staff were of excellent standards. Our hotel room and the public areas were spacious and scrupulously clean. The verandah dining area was of particular note with great beach and sea views. The all inclusive package all guests enjoyed meant... more

Booked 3.5 week holiday via Dreamticket.com. Dreamticket use Walkers Tours based in Columbo for transfers, etc. and they also act as your contacts during your stay in Sri Lanka. We received an excellent service from both companies. Emerald Bay hotel is very basic, run down and in need of a complete refurbishment. We moved rooms 4 times due to non... more

Emerald Bay is a hotel that is not for the faint hearted!! We found the staff could not do enough for you and were pleasant and accomodating at all times. This hotel was lacking in the state of the rooms. We had to shower in salt water, the wiring was frightening but at least the air con worked all be... more

In keeping with other reviews, the sea was deadly and we arrived just after the man had drowned, although I cannot imagine anyone in their right mind going anywhere near the sea. The beach inplaces is like quick sand and you would struggle to get to safety. Our room was just adequate. The lights were dim and the air con... more

This was our second visit to Sri Lanka and as always the people make up for anything lacking in the quality of the hotels. Emerald Bay is a good base from where to discover the wonderful sites around this part of the island. We found it to be basic but clean. The service was good and the food was average... more

It was a day and a half before we were told that the sea has such a dangerous undertow that swimming and even paddling can be fatal. One fellow guest drowned while we were there. Later we were told that four children and one tourist had drowned in the last few weeks. The hotel displayed no notices of the dangers.... more
