We were very close to Charney Bassett after visiting Abingdon. We just had to go back for old times sake,( we looked after the Chequers for 9 weeks in 2006 for the brewery) we were not dissapointed, in fact we were absolutely delighted with the whole place, the hanging baskets were stunning, our first comment. the garden and car park... We stopped off here for lunch, only to be told they had finished serving food but could offer us a sandwich. Choices were different types of cheese, Parma ham or prawns. We all chose cheese, it was horrible, bread wasn't fresh, it was tasteless, and to top it off it cost £5.75 each, plus £3.90 for a pint. Although the... More

We always look for a nice place to stay on route to and from Portsmouth/Plymouth on route to Spain. Last year we stayed in what looked like a Beatrix Potter style cottage Inn with a fab menu in The Quantocks called the Blue Ball in Triscombe......it was terrible. Sailing into Portsmouth this time we chose The Cheques.....getting the initial gripes... More

4 of us ate here, and no question, the steaks here are the best around. Cooked to perfection and very tasty. I had the Cajun pork salad to start, which was on their specials and it was incredible. The sticky toffee pudding is unreal also, but I could have chosen any of their desserts as they all looked fantastic. Service... More

Quite a long way from the main road signage, but well worth the trip. Food excellent with a great choice on the menu. Staff very obliging and extremely professional. Would definitely visit again when in the area.

Very nice and popular pub restaurant. Speciality is steaks, which are very scrumptious and not unreasonably priced. Enjoyed good food and good service and some nice Port. Would return again. Mark Abingdon

Travelling back to Swansea after a visit to Dunstable we saw a signpost for the Chequers Inn off the A420. I did think we'd be way off the beaten track as we wound our way along a single track road, but instead we found ourselves in a beautiful village and in this lovely country pub in about 5 minutes! We... More

We thought we were reserving a room in Oxford, but it turns out that Oxfordshire is a lot bigger than Oxford. Charney Bassett is an exquisite English village, and the experience of staying here was far more authentic than wandering with thousands of tourists in Oxford. Charney Bassett is my impression of England a hundred years ago: rural beauty, walking... More
