Hi there Bicarb! Thank you for that review. You obviously enjoyed Fete Day, as did we all. I'm pleased you liked the burgers and the beer, we were flat out all afternoon and managed to sell out. I'm looking forward to making next year's "do" even bigger and better than this year with such positive reviews and reactions from customers... More

I visited Matfen for the village fête on the 4th July, a beautiful, picturesque village with a large green, overlooked by The Black Bull. After the morning rain, the scorching afternoon sun was very welcome and drew the crowds, particularly families and children. The Black Bull made a welcome focal point and 'watering hole', with attentive, welcoming and friendly staff... More

Thanks for your lovely review. I'm so pleased you enjoyed the Village Fete and what we had to offer at the pub. It was a tremendous day with so many people having a lovely time, listening to the music especially. I do hope you'll call in again, next time you're up this way - make yourself known when you do.... Called in for a couple of pints Matfen fete day, this may make this review pretty meaningless as the whole of Matfen was busy. The pub was full and due to the fete was selling drinks in plastic glasses. Had a couple of pints of hand pulled 'dognobbler' and I must admit it wasn't the best pints I had tasted... More

Hi there, and thanks for your review. All I can say is that we have to be responsible villagers and use plastic glasses on two days of the year: Fete Day and Bonfire Night. I agree that they are not the best vessels to enjoy an ale out of, but I have to disagree that the beer was to blame.... More

Awful service and atmosphere! I'm sat in here at 2240hrs on a Thursday night. I and 6 of my friends have been putting money into the till for the last 2 hours. We were just about to start a game of darts when the landlord came over and told us to drink up and get out so he could go... More

Thanks for your review. I am sorry that you misunderstood our bar staff regarding closing times. As a rural village pub, we close at 11pm at the latest, rather than carry on serving drinks up until then. Last orders are at 10.40pm in order to allow you to finish your drinks and be out by 11pm. So, although you may... More

If you like steak, a friendly country pub and local ales you'll struggle to find better fare. My wife and I like medium well and medium rare steaks and both t-bones arrived cooked to perfection. The steaks are massive, the accompanying veg falling off the plate and to be honest I need a lie down to recover. the photo is... More

Thank you so much for your lovely review. We're really glad you stayed to try our T-Bone steaks and trust you got back to the hotel safely. We look forward to meeting you again sometime. Cheers! More

Not a huge menu and judging by the fact it was all on a blackboard I guess it regularly changes. In this case however small is most definitely beautiful. We were a party of eight and each and every one of us loved our particular choice. For me it was back to the 70s with prawn cocktail and a rib... More

Thanks for your recent review. You're right, we do just have a small menu, but it's what we hope is enough choice for a bigger group to be all satisfied with. Everything is freshly prepared so when we run out, we run out until the following week when deliveries come back in. I have to say, what a lovely group... More

A very short walk from Matfen Hall through the graveyard ( you'll need a torch) to this grand little pub in the village. We first went on Wed evening and sadly they weren't serving food (Thurs, Fri,Sat & Sun only) but this didn't distract from our enjoyment. The pub has been updated and is a comfortable space that is light... More

Just a short stroll from Matfen Hall hotel through the village churchyard and you will come across the Black Bull directly in front of you. The Black Bull is a lovely traditional pub in the quant village of Matfen. It is the focal point of the village and a warm welcome awaits you from Nigel, Ali and regulars alike. There... More

We visited the Black Bull for the first time on Saturday 27/09/14. The food was excellent - my wife had cod and chips (not the usual batter encrusted cod served in most places) I had the scallops on black puddng which was on the menu as a starter but the prepared as a main course for me. Not only was... More
