A stay in the second highest pub in England was a treat for us on our coast to Coast walk. Do not expect everything to be perfect here - IT IS A VERY OLD PLACE so those people who do not like the decor need to rethink. The food was copious - two massive Barnsley chops - the service was... More

We stayed in room 11, a lovely view and pretty comfortable but a couple of little things let the room down. The bathroom is a wetroom which is a novelty but an ill-fitting window blind with a three-inch gap at the bottom, lack of a toiletries rack in the shower and low shower pressure took the edge off it. We... More

A very popular lunchtime location for hikers and motorists alike. Olde world charm by the bucketload. I suppose in winter, with a few roaring fires, you'd imagine yourself back in time by a few centuries, waiting for the stagecoach to struggle through with the mail. Service very pleasant, if somewhat slow. Good pub food type menu of the "chips with... More

A brief stay at the Lion Inn included some fine ale and good meals. Our rooms were excellent. Part of the attraction is knowing yourself to be up on the moors and in the company of Coast to Coast walkers and other outdoor types. Our stay seemed to coincide with a lack of such people - sad in view of... More

After hours of walking along the disused train line, this was a very welcome site as it is appeared on the ridge! Right in the middle of nowhere but a perfect stop for our C2C adventure. It was possibly the windiest day of the year (Hurricane Bertha to blame I think!) but the pub was cosy and welcoming. Our room... More

Have known this place for years and visited it numerous times for food but this was the first time we stayed over. As ever the atmosphere is good day or evening. Our room was small and unfortunately noisy as it was located above ladies toilet so every time hand drier was used you heard it. Also room 1 is the... More

An extremely busy Hotel/Restaurant bar. A comfortable ensuite bedroom on the ground floor. We ate in the restaurant, the menu was extensive with a great special board too. All value for money with friendly service.

Stayed here for a night while doing the C2C walk. Great site to view across the Moor when you've just done a 23 mile walk! Dinner was superb, big portions, well cooked and great service. This might sound fussy, but sadly this was let down by not having proper porridge on the breakfast menu (a must for walkers!) and we... More

This is a renowned popular venue for local people wanting a drive out for a drink or a meal or for walkers on one of the many long distance trails that cross the moor, as was the case with us. The views from the car park are far reaching and for walkers, the high location of the inn can be... More

Some friends and I have recently completed walking Wainwright's Coast to Coast. After tramping across the moors for hours, we found, to our delight, that this was our B&B accommodation for the night. What a sight for sore feet when we entered the door. A warm welcome, wonderful food and just brilliant, friendly locals and staff. It's in the middle... More
