prices seem a bit high, but food has improved since our last visit, and we are "regulars and locals". Atmosphere can't be beaten, very relaxing and undemanding. Staff are always friendly attentive. The "dog situation " is a problem for us, we love dogs but don't really want them so close and wagging tails near our plates, in fairness there... More

We have been regular customers for the last 10 years but standards have definitely slipped of late. Staff are polite and I blame myself for being a bit 'British' (I am Canadian) and not complaining about the meal I was served. The portions are very large but piled high with chips that have been deep fried several times and the... More

No longer the pub it was. Ate here for my fathers birthday and the food and service was dire. The service has been poor the last few times we've been but my parents kept hoping it would be like it was. I won't be going back, there are far better places in the locality with far better food and cheaper... More

We had been here for a drink before and thought that next time we would stay over night. This is an old inn ideally suited for the hardy walkers who have slogged over the moors and want to have a soak, a pint, a meal, and a sociable evening before turning in. Not being hardy walkers and having only slogged... More

Arrived at this very well appointed hotel after eleven days of walking desperate for a quality overnight experience. The welcome after a wet end to our days's walk was good and the rooms were generally very well furnished, equipped and spacious. The evening meal in the bar was very good with enormous portions which represented excellent VFM. the breakfast in... More

As a local who has visited regularly for 30 years I'd have rated this place highly until recently. The food quality has dropped, yet the prices have risen ie all veggie meals are £11.50, which is far too much for simple bar meals - everything with chips, salad & peas. The menu has changed little over the years so I've... More

Came here for Saturday tea after spending the last few years being told how great it is! They we're not wrong, and I wish I'd been sooner. The views are stunning, the food is fantastic, huge tasty portions of home cooked food. Great atmosphere, fantastic beer. Keep it up, the best gem on the moors! Ps, if its a special... More

Arrived about 1.30 after our days walk and were shown to our room. Although it was clean and had everything we needed to say it was small is an understatement! It felt like we were in a prison cell, no room for our luggage apart from right next to the bed, which left no room for walkng around it! ate... More

We went to the Lion for a meal after a very enjoyable walk on the North York Moors with some friends from 'down South'. We've been going to this pub for years and have happy memories of many previous visits, so we told our friends about it, booked a table and went along with high expectations. Well, the location on... We have been here several times, once in the deep snow and have always found a warm welcome. The food is delicious and home made. The atmosphere is great with the open fire and a good selection of beers is available. Mind your head if you are not short! The inn is surrounded by wonderful country side and amazing views.
