Lovely old thatched cottage, friendly owner, good location. We stayed for two nights as a birthday getaway, we came down to see the tar barrels at Ottery and needed somewhere near to the fun but not too close as it's mayhem and lasts all night! We paid about £65 per night and I would say really we felt that the... More

Visited here on various occasions - have always had fabulous cream tea, great value, generous helpings of jam and cream as well as divine scones and absolutely friendly staff. A bit of a drive from our base at Lyme Regis, but well worth the effort ... Will definitely be returning .

First impressions of this cottage was dark and depressing. We were shown to our twin bedded room which was small, musty and looked like it needed a good clean. The shower was tiny and the bed linen very tired with linen headboards. We had travelled a long way and were very disappointed. We did not stay. On the positive side... More

I always wanted to sleep in a thatched cottage and now I have. There are low ceilings, steep stairs and uneven walls - everything you would expect from a very old cottage. The rooms are basic but clean and you get free Bronte biscuits as well as tea, coffee and bottled water.

We have enjoyed staying at the Southern Cross very much. We received a warm welcome and so did our dog. He was made to feel part of the family. Our room was spacious and the beds were very comfortable. Breakfast was delicious and well prepared. The attention paid to our needs was excellent. I was asked if I would prefer... More

We can't comment on the B&B facilities, but as a cream tea stop - it is without doubt the best we have sampled in Devon! This is from a walking group who have visited very many over the years. The scones are huge and warm and cooked to perfection, the jam and clotted cream plentiful, tea in china cups and... More

Stayed overnight with my son. Beautiful house but décor was very tired, and there was a weird smell - wet dog/musty smell everywhere. The shower was not powerful enough to wash my hair properly, and the toilet had a macerator which was very noisy. There was no wifi. The welcome was good, and the breakfast was nice.

Went for a short break and all in all quite disappointed. Rooms and décor are very tired and yes we know it is an old timber framed building etc.etc.but have stayed in similar which would knock this into a cocked hat. Had a damp musty odour throughout and felt as if it needed a good airing. Welcome was mediocre, which... More

Just got back from a relaxing 2 day stay in Devon. Southern Cross, Tim and his brother, made us feel very welcome. It's just what you would expect from a classic beamed, country B&B. Lots of character and an ideal base for exploring the area, in particular the amazing Donkey Sanctuary, Sidmouth and Lyme Regis. Started off each day with... More

Went down on a whim to see a friend who was having a rough time, called the owner who was a very nice person and booked a double room with a shared bathroom. Due to reasons i didn't ask i was the only one staying at the hotel and because of the timing of the events i could only get... More
