Yesterday we took a little day trip to Ojen to drop off a friend at her hotel and we ended up for lunch at the Refugio de Juanar. A very popular spot in the mountains above Marbella and it took us a while to get there. It was busy but we were relatively early and sat down for some tapas... More

although this hotel is literally over the mountain from where I live, we decided to try the restaurant and stay the night to save driving home. We had previously been put off of this venue as we have had such poor service, when even trying to get a cup of coffee. We arrived by way of the winding narrow road... More

A very pleasant surprise finding Refugio de Juanar. We have visited twice now, firstly to enjoy coffee inside by the glowing logs as the air is chillier in the winter months. We loved the ambiance and old fashioned unspoiled decor in the comfortable lounge area. Our second visit to have lunch today was as satisfying but I would agree with... More

This is a hidden Place but Worth to visit, especially if you like mountain hiking, the surroundings are beautiful, tracks are well described. The hotel has a swimming pool excellent after mountain walk. The Food was very good, good wine. The staff is friendly. Standard rooms, but clean.

We've stayed here three times now, but last night was the best - in Room No. 3, where General de Gaulle stayed and wrote his memoirs. We sat in front of our own open fire in the bedroom, relaxing before dinner - really nice. It's such a lovely place to stay, somewhat quirky but that adds to the charm. The... More

We have now seen the New Year in on three occasions at this wonderful former hunting lodge set in the mountains above Marbella. Although, the bedrooms are old fashioned that is part of its charm with wood fires and comfortable armchairs. It is run as a co-operative by the staff, who are welcoming and effficent. The food is simple but... More

The Refugio is reached by taking a well signposted minor road, off the A355, the Coin/Marbella road; at 780 meters (about 2,500 feet) above sea level, it stands in splendid isolation. It is far enough away from the haunts of the wealthy and the not so wealthy expats to make you feel out in the wild, but close enough for... More

Quite pricey perhaps because of the location which is up in the mountains and in the middle of the wood. Silence and nice atmosphere Went for a family reunion with our Spanish extended family. Would recommend the mixed grill which is more than enough for 2 people

We found the hotel, almost by accident, a couple of months ago, stayed for lunch and decided that we'de like to go back and stay. It was a delight. It's wonderfully quiet (just the sound of the birds), super food - full menu or snacks, lovely little bar and very personal and attentive service. Just outside the hotel, a short... More

What a place in which to go hide away! Knockout honeymoon or romantic getaway spot. Scary, beautiful 2 lane road from Marbella that winds around the mountains. Up, up, up until you see the clouds covering the seascape below. Then, after the turnoff, more miles through silent pine forests with sun-dappled branches. Twists, turns, until you finally reach your destination:... More
