Lovely heritage building close to city (walking distance). Friendly and efficient service -nothing too much trouble. Pleasant garden courtyard for breakfast, glass of wine etc.

This B&B is not for those who prefer sterile hotel rooms, private bathrroms and daily sheet changes. But I liked traipsing through the fragrant garden to the shower, the two big labradors who greet you, the simple, ample breakfast, and the lively conversation at the breafast table.

I have stayed in a variety of hotels and hostels that range from no stars to those pushing beyond five, and only once braved a bed and breakfast in Australia that reaffirmed all my fears for unwanted intimacy - sitting in someone's living room and having to make conversation and groping for a subject of mutual interest. Hmm. So I... More

I think it takes a certain type of person to like staying at a place like this. If you're really into quirky B&Bs then you might like this place. Personally this place wasn't for me at all and I found it to be rather overpriced for what you get but here is a list of its hits and misses. HIT:... More

I stayed at this hotel near the end of a grueling 4-week business trip and found that I didn't have enough energy left to handle its quirkiness well. This included having no one to greet me and show me my room, a bathroom on a different floor, no table or desk in my room that I could sit at, the... More

I think it takes a certain kind of person to appreciate the Brooklyn Arts, a truly bohemian hotel in Fitroy, the arts district of Melbourne. Although I’m sure others enjoyed their experience, especially those noted on this site. It was just not our cup of tea. From non-working bathrooms to no clean towels it was like paying to stay at... I am an art consultant and I travel often for work. Location, warmth and comfort is important to me as well as great art, coffee shops and eateries. Brooklyn Arts Hotel has all of the above and is in the perfect location to Gertrude Street and Smith Street. Maggie is fabulous and I loved the opulence of the dining room.... More

The Brooklyn Arts Hotel is one of the more unusual places we have stayed. It has more in common with a homestay than a traditional B&B (or indeed the 'hotel' in its name). Its quirky nature takes some getting used to, but if you want to be within very easy walking distance of the bohemian heart of Melbourne (Fitzroy) for... More

A delightful introduction to Australia. It was more like being at home rather then in an hotel, and Maggie was a wonderful hostess without being intrusive. We were made very welcome right from the start. The breakfast was do-it-yourself style and an amazing selection of teas and jams was provided. Our fellow guests were all delightful and friendly and interesting.... More

I loved this place with its gracious architecture, antique filled rooms, friendly service, and Maggie, the most relaxed and convivial owner that I have met anywhere in a hotel. My huge room had an additional balcony room with a desk, and a sparklingly fresh bathroom all in white tiles. The big breakfast table downstairs seems to be open all hours... More

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
Brooklyn is a perfect place to stay if you are not looking for a standard hotel room. It is beautiful, friendly, quiet, interesting, quirky and personal, within walking distance of central Melbourne. The atmosphere is relaxed and congenial. There is a garden to sit in and birds to listen to.Brooklyn is a big old house on the city edge of Fitzroy. You can walk through parks or take a tram a few minutes from the door, to city venues, stations and airport connections. Fitzroy’s great mix of people makes this one of the most interesting parts of Melbourne to hang out in. ... more   less
