This charming hotel which is steeped of local history but at the same time looks forward to the future is situated inside the stately homes of the Lo Schiavo and Lauricella families that were the "Merchants of the Sea." Just giving a look at the original maiolica tiles and at the old furnace we realize that these houses that where built during the first and second half of 800, tell us of a period of economic prosperity that marked the local economy of those years. In fact thanks to the rich trade in local products such as malvasia, wine and capers, the entire island, due to the large naval fleet ranks first in the Aeolian context outlining a new era for a such small community. "The five balconies" hotel embeds itself in this scenery and leaves and re-evaluates traces of ancient history such as the "millstone" located in the suite. The two buildings (Lo Schiavo and Lauricella homes) united today in a single property, overlooking the main street "Via Risorgimento" where we find many sophisticated shops, have themselves designated the name of this hotel"I Cinque Balconi." These balconies which overlook the sea in front of Salina and at the same time face east towards the beautiful Aeolian sunrises, once were the observation point on the local everyday life. Its nice to imagine how the families of the "masters of the sea" look out of the balconies, while they waited for the beautiful schooners laden with good news and sales made in the mainland. One can breath the scent of this magic story just going up the two staircases of stone which access the main floor, where are located the rooms marked by some historical details highlighted by subtle play of a carefully selected light. The beautiful garden full of citrus and flowers, the proximity to the beach (about 100 meters), the central location and the historical traces, make the Hotel "I Cinque Balconi" an example of rare beauty and unique simplicity. 2) Segments of the history of the ancient masters of the sea of the Island of Salina scrolled through the historical homes of the Lo Schiavo and Lauricella families.
