This hotel is set deep within a deep and steep sided valley within the cloud forest zone. It is difficult to get to via a narrow un-surfaced windy road. Although there are individual houses around - mainly San Jose holiday homes - the valley is tranquil, set in the mountains where the air is pure and clear. It is a... More

This location is all about birding. If you want to see a Quetzal, this is your place. Really nice cabin in an isolated mountain location. Meals are buffet and adequate, but not fine dining. You can sit at a private table or with a group. Hummingbird feeder and fruit stations attract a wide variety of birds. There are trails for... More

Winding roads and cloudy skies lead to this peaceful valley full of beautiful birds. Well worth the trip to have good food, nice drink and lovely walks. Great room with a fireplace that warmed a cold night. The quetzal and toucans were as inviting as the people.

This was our first stop on our trip around Costa Rica, and we really enjoyed the area, the Hotel and the buffet meals. We did a near by hike that had a fabulous view, hiked down the waterfalls, make sure to the second waterfall, it is great, and saw lots of hummingbirds a few quetzals. My kids were a little... More

As you descend the hill into the valley of San Gerardo de Dota, it feels so isolated that there could be dinosaurs hidden in this valley. Well we did not see any dinosaurs, but we did see quetzal and toucanette thanks to our excellent guide from the Savegre Hotel, who made sure that we not only saw these birds, but... More

Reasonable rooms, great trails, especially the one to the waterfall. Pretty gardens, but disappointing food. We realised on day 2 that we could have a bar snack for lunch, so did not have to have 2 virtually identical 3-course meals each day. The early morning trip to find quetzals was great; we spotted lots, though the guide said he had... More

This was the last stop on our group tour - and the best accommodation. Nice big rooms in well-spaced-out lodges and good plentiful food, from buffet. Lounge bar with efficient bartender and a feature open fire (it was cold up at that altitude!). Feeders in the grounds attracted hummingbirds, woodpecker, silky flycatcher - also in the grounds saw a resplendant... More

If you are a nature lover, especially a bird lover, this is the place for you. First of all, there were hummingbird feeders and other bird feeders all over the property. There were beautiful birds everywhere I looked. A short hike down the road with my group led us to see resplendent quetzals, both male and female, plus many other... More

Birds: Yes, you will see your Quetzal. Whether it's with Merino, whose father founded the area and still lives at the lodge, or some other excellent guide, you are in good hands and in the right place. You will also see other beautiful birds, hopefully emerald toucanets or sulphur-winged parakeets, as I did. And if you go out with Merino... More

Nice hotel, property , great bird guide /Marino.There is a closure of the interamerican highway( since weeks ago ) which means a much longer and difficult drive from / to san jose and airport. i think the hotel should alert future guests by email etc, but they don't really care. another traveler warned us before our stay , so i...
