We stayed here two nights while on a bird watching tour. The beds were very comfortable with lots of blankets for a cozy nights sleep. The family who owns and operates this small hotel are part of the original family who founded the valley in the early 1950s. The dinning hall is new and a little fancy for me. The... More

Though I am not a serious birdwatcher, I visited San Gerardo de Dota primarily to see the resplendant quetzal. I am happy to say that I saw four over the course of two days, all of which were on the grounds or on the trail network of this small hotel. I saw dozens of other types of birds, butterflies, and... Excellent costumer service. Thanks Antonio for taking care of us.The food and the natural juices were very good. Peaceful, beautiful. Good and clean cabins. Good value for money. Plenty of things to do around or simply to rest.

We spent two nights here, the food was good if uninspiring. It helps to like trout in San Gerardo, after all, but if you don't like trout, there's always chicken. The rooms were great, newly constructed and nicely appointed as well as warm, which is needed at over 7,000 feet of altitude. Speaking of altitude, this is the lowest hotel... More

I drove in first gear down into the San Gerardo de dota valley birding the entire way until I came to the end of the road where the violet-earred hummingbird was calling incessantly next to the Spanish style home/ office of Suenos del Bosque (Forest dream). The owners daughters greeted me with smiles.I paid a very very very fair price... More

Good, spacy cottages with all required amenities including hot shower; nice environment; refreshing cool nights but enough blankets to keep you warm in bed. Good to spot a variety of birds, including the quetzal (we saw 7 in one tree in the early morning), and even some monkeys on the trails that go into the forest on the slope beyond... More

It's hard to imagine a more idealic spot for birding and roaming. Unfortunately, it poured the whole time I was there and didn;'t sight the resplendent quetzal. The biodiversity of the area was overwhelming as is much of the highliand in Costa Rica. I look forward to returning/.

Nice and quiet. It takes quiet some time to get there by car. The surroundings are beautiful and a great place to spot the Quetzal. Its a bit chilly up there so take a light sweater with you. Overall great stay! I was there in november 2012 btw. I can't select that date so i thought i just mention it... More

Really enjoyed the atmosphere, time seemed to slow down. Loved all small places around to eat local food and the endless amount of trout in the gushing river! The only thing that was bad was that we arrived to check at 10 pm and it was pitch dark and no one there, we had to speak Spanish to a man... More

My friend and I came to Costa Rica at this time of year in hopes of seeing a Resplendant Quetzal, as apparently the best time to see these splendid birds is from March to June. I had imagined that we would be led on a hike up into the hills, wouldhave a bird pointed out to us, and would jockey for... More
