My son & I initially were only going to stay 1 night, but ended up staying 3 & found it hard to leave at that. The owner, Mikey was very accommodating and went out of his way to make our trip eventful & memorable. i not only wanted to see the tourist attractions but equally wanted to experience everyday C.R.... This is in our opinion the best way to experience Volcan Arenal, especially on a budget. El Castillo is off the beaten track and not a tourist machine like La Fortuna. El Castillo is an awesome little village with a lot of personality that we wish we could have had more time to experience. Mikey, the new owner, is unbelievably... More

We have stayed here for 2 nights in april, and really loved our time here! The host is very kind and helpfull from the beginning till the end. He gave us a lot of tips and other inside information about where to go and what to see. We got to some places of the beaten track we would have never... More

Good value for Money! What to say about our stay in El Castillo? Our host Mickey said that the most important is to tell the best story and not being the best fisherman :) and he was RIGHT...Mickey will have a lot of amazing stories for you and you won t be disappointed at all :) Thank you for all... My girlfriend and I stayed at the Pura Vida Guesthouse in March 2013. Mikey was a tremendous host, giving us great recommendations for hikes, hot springs, zip-lining, etc. He really knows his way around Arenal, El Castillo and La Fortuna, and he has friends/contacts around town that were helpful as well. We ended up leaving our new hiking shoes behind... More

Nice, very clean rooms, big kitchen to use and a terrace in front of the house to hang out. But the best of pura vida hostel is mike, the owner! Probably the best host we've ever met. He cares from the minute you arrive, gives great advices and shows you the best secret spots of the area, which you would... More

My son and I stayed at Pura Vida for two nights and we really enjoyed our stay. Mike was great. He always greeted my son and I with a smile and treated us like we had been pals for years. Me and my husband stayed at PuraVida for 4 days. This hostel changed owner recently and Mike is wonderful! He tried his best to comfort us: arranged activities, took us for a walk to a beautiful secret waterfall, helped very much with transpotration etc. Definately recommend the place as well as El Castillo itself. This village is breathtakingly beautiful!

This is a cute little place off the beaten path with breathtaking views of the volcano and lush rain forest. Robin was a great hostess! She made us comfortable, helped us see what we wanted to see and get where we wanted to go. Some personal issues arose at home and she also went above and beyond at helping us... More

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
The Pura Vida Guesthouse just opened September 2012 and is not a regular guesthouse or hostel. There is no official reception and no fancy uniform, and we rent only three rooms with SHARED bath (hot shower). The guesthouse offers a smaller, friendly type accommodation that is simple, economical and comfortable and very laid back. Located in the fun and unique village of El Castillo de La Fortuna close to Arenal Volcano National Park. The Pura Vida Guesthouse is part hostel, part guesthouse and 100 percent pura vida. Where is El Castillo? Just 10 km. off the Rainforest Highway between La Fortuna and Nuevo Arenal tucked between the lake waterfront and the Arenal National Forest you will discover one of the most unique places on earth. The village of El Castillo was created as a result of the 1968 surprise eruption of Cerro Arenal that required the mass relocation of hundreds of families to safer zones. Originally a quiet agricultural centre, El Castillo was soon discovered by a new generation of bohemians looking for the perfect blend of climate and lifestyle. And it's no surprise, since El Castillo provides the best views of the volcano or lake anywhere. The unique combination of quiet village life and a growing number of ex-pat enterprises means the area buzzes with activity-from canopy tours and horseback riding to hiking, swimming, canoeing and kayaking. We boast Costa Rica's largest butterfly conservatory and the ever-popular Snake and Reptile Zoo. Now, a growing arts and music culture is making El Castillo a must-see destination for creative people from all over the world.Dining choices are varied and growing every year. Getting here is can be challenging- we wish the road was in better shape but in a way, the road is one of the reasons this is such a wonderful place. Come for a day, a week or stay for a lifetime. However you discover El Castillo, you'll find us Super! Natural! Local activities that can be booked onsite here at the guesthouse Include- Thermal Hot Springs (Tabacon, Baldi and others)- Hiking in the forest- Arenal Volcano National Park- Night Hikes- Waterfalls- Mountain Biking- Boat Tours- Bird watching- Cerro Chato- Arenal Ecozoo Serpentarium- Canopy- Butterfly Conservatory- Sky Tram- Horseback riding- Hangin Bridges- Jeep-Boat-Jeep to/from Monteverde- Rafting- Lava Trail- Los Tucanes Trail- Cao Negro- La Fortuna Waterfall- Rancho Margot- and more.Pura Vida literally means 'pure life' but is the Costa Rican equivalent of Hawaii's Aloha and is used in Costa Rica for hello, goodbye or just to say I am happy, I love and appreciate life, or I am doing great! You will find pura vida is contagious and soon you will find yourself exclaiming Pura Vida!! right along with the 'Ticos' the self named nickname of Costa Ricans..Tica if female.)Come stay with us for the ultimate in pura vida laid back life style. Quite simply, you won't find anything quite like Pura Vida Guesthouse Hostel in all of Costa Rica. 'Come as a guest leave as a friend.' ... more   less
