I really enjoyed my stay at Essence Arenal Hostel. I was planning to stay there for 3 nights, then I added one more night and canceled my monteveda cloud forest trip just because I like it so much. I can stay there for years I guess. It's very peaceful place there, and the food the chef provided everyday is so... More

I stayed at Essence in December 2012 and stopped by for dinner in February 2014. When I go back, I will stay there again. The location is breathtaking. El Castillo is a little out of the way, and it is possibly the most peaceful place I've ever been. You can walk around the organic farm, do yoga or meditate on... More

Two best rooms have 1/2 of shower without curtain or door so water splashes off you into bathroom. No ceiling fans and in August it does not get "no-fan-needed" cold at night. Lights malfunctioning. Broken window screens. Door handle broke and locked us in room, worker told us management had known of handle problem previously. Summary: poorly maintained, could be... More

We stayed 2 nights in the safari tents. We should have been alerted right away by the use of the term “boutique hostel.” Really. It was great listening to the sounds of the jungle at night, and having a private porch to hang out on. Some of the staff who work at the hostel (Henry and Chico in particular) --... More

We stayed in a tent with balcony, did Yoga at 6.am breathing the sun, had great food an fun preparing it together with the creative chef an laughed a lot with the crew! Thanks to them! Pura Vida! My advice: Bring your own car and if sleeping in a tent you need a mosquitonet.

Essence is amazing. After two weeks of traveling up and down Costa Rica's Pacific Coast, this experience was more than we could have asked for. The staff was friendly, helpful and skilled, the location was breathtaking, and we left feeling refreshed and eager to visit again. We really appreciated Essence's emphasis on health and wellness. The vegetarian meals, prepared by... More

This is a very nice little hostel. The people are great, their is a little pool and trampoline for kids up the hill on their finca. About two doors down there is a little bakery which makes *the* best rye bread and cookies! You may need to order in advance. The hostel provides breakfast, lunch and dinner at a price.... More

Loved this place. Great quiet location with a fantastic view. The amenities were good and the food was excellent. Enjoyed seeing the volcano from the jacuzzi (although the water was not hot enough). We stayed in one of the delux rooms and were warned that it occasionally had pressure problems in the shower. However, we discovered that the pressure in... More

This place deserves 5 full starts. The location is fabulous, the food was super delicious, fresh, vegetarian made by the chef there. The rooms were very clean, with amazing views, hot water, and window nets so you can leave the windows open. The price was incredible, for a private room for 3-4 people we paid 60-70 in June. That is... More

This is such a beatiful location. the staff are so welcoming. Stay here don`t go to La Fortuna town unless you want more touristy experience. Here you are close to the land and a fabulous view of the volcano. The tent was very comfortable, the birds, monkeys and the rest sang us awake ! Food was excellent and worth paying... More
