Nice place to stay especially since Playa Avellanas is so nice! The Hotel is very nicly set and decorated (loved the pool and patio area). Its very clean and quite. We enjoyed the shared kitchen facilities because we always met fun people while cooking. Good to have the chance to cook because eating out in CR it not that cheap.... More

I didn't personally stay at Mauna Loa, but my parents stayed here for four nights and had an incredible time. Gustauvo was super friendly and even invited me to come and join my parents in their private pool whenever I wanted. My parent's were made to feel at home in paradise and we're definitely interested in returning for another stay,... More

I loved the Mauna Loa. The grounds are beautiful, well-cared for jungle, plenty of nature with a gorgeous pool in the middle. With only 6 cabins, it is quiet and peaceful. Wake to the sounds of the jungle every morning. The cabinas are spacious, simple and quite clean. Your own little place in paradise! The true heart of this place... More

Stayed at the Mauna Loa for 11 nights. Really enjoyed the place. There are 6 completely separate bungalows. They are rustic, but really cute. Gustavo and his staff really are super helpful. No TV, but internet worked great in all areas of the property. Lovely pool with great lightening at night. Great for a surfer as the beach is only... More

We came here after bailing out of Tamarindo, which we found too touristy and a little seedy. Also, the surf was crap! This place was the cure. I'd call the look jungle chic, with contemporary architecture and a beautiful pool surrounded by thatched-roof huts. As with all of the places in Avellanas, you walk a little bit to the beach,... We arrived in the middle of a downpour and Mauna Loa had temporarily lost power. It did not seem to be a promising beginning. However, the staff there, Gustavo (the manager) and Josefina, were wonderful and so helpful. The cook, Lourdes, made excellent homemade pizzas. This place is VERY tranquilo. No TV, no hot water, but for those looking to... More

I wasn't sure what to expect while driving down the dirt road to get to the hotel! What I got was wonderful! The beach is a short walk down the road, and is just beautiful! Great surfing and swimming! The resort itself is very down to earth! Beautiful pool, excellent food, wonderful people to be around! They could not do... More

We really enjoyed our stay at Mauna Loa, from the awesome pool, to the covered cabanas, and plethora of hammocks! The on-site restaurant was incredible! We made the mistake of not getting much cash before arriving, unaware that the nearest bank was in Tamarindo. Gustavo, the hotel manager, helped us set up taxi services and allowed us to run a...
