The five star rating is for the location and decent service. Guys, it's a hostel. You can't pay hostel prices and expect the Hilton. The location is amazing. It's 2.7 miles northwest of Bardon Mill station. The walk up is very lovely, past farms and sheep. You can always ask people for directions if there are no signs where you're... More

I was treated very well as a vegan in terms of staff behaviour. In the evening the cook had made a vegan dish and there was soya milk provided. The food was very basic but it WAS vegan and there were three courses as had been paid for in advance. The beds were not impressive - a private room for... More

First ever stay in a youth hostel and I was pleasantly surprised. Beds have sheets and duvet (so no need for sleeping bag) and showers are excellent. Staff v friendly and helpful. Breakfast was good. Went next door to pub for evening meal - decent food and good value too.

I'm sorry room 17 wasn't the quietest spot for you. We do our best to manage the needs of our differing visitors, but with all the best planning in the world we can't fully prepare for where people will go and what they will do. I'm glad though that the sleep you (eventually) had was good, and I hope that... More

If you´re hiking the wall, this location and price can´t be beat. It was quite loud at times (there was a young school group of 20 plus children using the stairwell as a game place). We were the only other two in the hostel, with the only room directly attached to the stairwell. We complained about the noise, as we... More

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Very helpful and enthusiastic staff. The food was excellent. Best I've eaten in a hostel. It's just a short walk to Hadrian's wall and it's right next door to the information centre. Very interesting Roman forts nearby.

Whilst walking Hadrian's Wall Path my friends and I stayed at YHA Once Brewed we were made very welcome. It is a very peaceful location and the accommodation was very comfortable. We were so relieved to arrive at the YHA Once Brewed as we had encountered some bad weather and arrived very wet. However we were made welcome and soon... More

It was many years since I'd been hostelling and I was just looking for simple inexpensive accommodation for a night or two. How things have changed. What a revelation. The accommodation was simple, but very, very comfortable and I slept extremely well in this peaceful location. The service was outstanding. You can now buy a very good meal cooked on... More

Such a shame this is being modernised, we loved it. Home cooked food, lovely staff, comfy room. Wonderful.the dining room was bright cheerful, dinner and breakfast far better than in many pubs and all we needed.

Within walking distance of the most mountainous part of Hadrian's wall, this is a traditional hostel, quite roomy in the lounge and dining room, very cramped in the self-catering kitchen. There is a kitchenette upstairs with kettle and microwave. We opted to buy dinner. It was pretty good, and the staff were coping well with a lot of visitors for... More
