This is one of the YHA's oldest hostels (1934 I think it said) and it is in need of some care and attention. I believe they are going to build a new hostel so maybe explains the fact they haven't spent a lot of money maintaining an older building. The room was ok, the usual standard and clean. The shower... This hostel will be closed from 11 September (site being developed) which may explain my negative experience. The good things: well placed for doing two fantastic walks near the Wall - to Walwick and Greenhead. Also, next door to National Park Centre (lots of useful info). Friendly staff, a large dining room, hooks in room 1 (some dorms in hostels... More

and that's not just us hikers, but the YHA also. Serviceable, but worn down. The room smelled a bit funny, but was clean. The beds creaked and groaned as if to collapse (old wooden bunks with loose bolts). On the plus side, there was a drying room for wet gear (we'd been caught out in the rain) and a washer... More

A group of us stayed in June after the second leg of cycling the Hadrian's Cycleway. It is reached by a series of very steep hills, so get your practise in. The hostel was reasonably comfortable, although it could do with more showers. Additionally, communication of our booking seemed problematic, as our room allocation list, which was sent in advance,... More

Stayed here last weekend as part of a cycling group. The hostel itself is in a cracking location. The pub next door (Twice Brewed) is excellent. The self catering kitchen could do with improving but I'm sure that'll happen when its rebuilt. The toilets and showers on the ground floor are few and far between, you have to go hunting... More

This is a good hostel with easy access to Hadrians Wall. Comfortable room, large living and dining, and free WiFi. The self catering kitchen is small, and only one fridge, but I think they are trying to get you to buy meals from their kitchen. They have plans to create a mega centre for school camps but a hostel is... More

Very nice stay for a weekend early in 2015. Situated in what can hardly be called a hamlet, Twice brewed. A short walk from a very nice inn and the wall, impressive views of the landscape around the area. Well situated for anyone wishing to take a nights break halfway along the wall. Good for anyone wishing to stay cheaply... More

The five star rating is for the location and decent service. Guys, it's a hostel. You can't pay hostel prices and expect the Hilton. The location is amazing. It's 2.7 miles northwest of Bardon Mill station. The walk up is very lovely, past farms and sheep. You can always ask people for directions if there are no signs where you're... More

I was treated very well as a vegan in terms of staff behaviour. In the evening the cook had made a vegan dish and there was soya milk provided. The food was very basic but it WAS vegan and there were three courses as had been paid for in advance. The beds were not impressive - a private room for... More

First ever stay in a youth hostel and I was pleasantly surprised. Beds have sheets and duvet (so no need for sleeping bag) and showers are excellent. Staff v friendly and helpful. Breakfast was good. Went next door to pub for evening meal - decent food and good value too.

I'm sorry room 17 wasn't the quietest spot for you. We do our best to manage the needs of our differing visitors, but with all the best planning in the world we can't fully prepare for where people will go and what they will do. I'm glad though that the sleep you (eventually) had was good, and I hope that... More
