Lovely location, quiet neighbourood. Metro and Yamanote lines very close. Rooms are typically japanese, but, like it is been said by others, it is not really a ryokan... Staff very friendly. If I travel again in Tokyo, I would go back there.

It isn't easy to find a good hostel in Tokyo. This one is not what you may call a ryokan, it's rather a pension, yet it is very pleasant. The staff is very kind and the lady speaks perfectly english. The location is a little bit far from the sites of interest, but it is very close to 2 subway... More

Lovely location with typical japanese atmosphere ! Close to metro station. Staff is very friendly. The rooms are also typically japanese, with air-conditionning. A very good choice if you want to enjoy your stay in Japan.

Staying at the Annex Katsutaro Ryokan was a great choice for my family trip in June/July. We (wife and 18 yo son) stayed here the first 6 nights of our 2 week trip to Tokyo and Kyoto. My wife was a little nervous when I booked a ryokan type hotel, but it worked out perfectly. The staff was wonderful, and... More

This was my first hotel during my first visit to Japan; definitely an excellent place to stay in! Perhaps the most important feature of this hotel is undoubtedly its location. It is only a 5 minutes walk from the station! I will be back.

Japanese style rooms with private bath, a/c, refrigerator, free internet in excellent area that is close to metro stops and easy walk to Ueno Park and museums (and also to Narita airport). I agree with the praise of others. Women on staff spoke excellent English and were friendly and helpful. Men more businesslike but still helpful. Wish they offered Japanese... More

This is a modern building, but the rooms are traditional and a really good size, with a big bathroom which was a nice change. The rooms were warm and comfortable and very peaceful and quiet. This was our last stay in Japan and it was really nice to have a couple of quieter days exploring this area before we went... More

The Annex Katsutaro isn't a ryokan but more a small hotel with Japanese style tatami rooms. The rooms are comfortable and include bathrooms. The location is really nice amongst the lane ways of Yanaka, although it can be hard to find dinner in this location if you're not Japanese. Best of all the Annex was super quiet, there was no... Nice rooms and friendly staff. The staff at the front desk when we checked in was very helpful and gave us a map and directions to nearby restaurants and attractions. Convenient location near the train station and Ueno Park. Would stay there again.

Staying in Ueno, Asakusa

Neighborhood Profile
Ueno, Asakusa
Traces of the history and culture of the Edo (old Tokyo) era remain vividly in Ueno and Asakusa. Spacious Ueno Park is a great place to relax and visit a variety of different museums and galleries. At Ameyoko which starts in front of Ueno station, the grocery stores and clothing shops are crammed alongside fishmongers. It gets particularly busy at the end of the year, when many people go on shopping sprees. The town of Asakusa, developed around Sensoji temple, has many shops selling goods and clothing from old Japan, making it a great place for souvenir hunting. It's also known for various annual festivals, and the whole district gets involved with the huge Sanja Festival in May.
