This is a modern building, but the rooms are traditional and a really good size, with a big bathroom which was a nice change. The rooms were warm and comfortable and very peaceful and quiet. This was our last stay in Japan and it was really nice to have a couple of quieter days exploring this area before we went... More

The Annex Katsutaro isn't a ryokan but more a small hotel with Japanese style tatami rooms. The rooms are comfortable and include bathrooms. The location is really nice amongst the lane ways of Yanaka, although it can be hard to find dinner in this location if you're not Japanese. Best of all the Annex was super quiet, there was no... Nice rooms and friendly staff. The staff at the front desk when we checked in was very helpful and gave us a map and directions to nearby restaurants and attractions. Convenient location near the train station and Ueno Park. Would stay there again.

The best part of this hotel is its location, which is: - in a lovely residential area with a good weekend market, some lovely shops and a pretty university campus - well connected to the rest of Tokyo with both the Tokyo subway and JR station close by - a direct train trip to Narita Aiport from the Nippori JR... For me as someone who traveled alone, this ryokan had everything I really needed: - Air-Conditioner - own bathroom with toilet and shower - towels, hair-dryer, free tea - very quiet - many more The ryokan was very easy accessible from Narita airport by Skyliner. It is near to two different stations which allows to access places like Shibuya, Harajuku,... More

Stayed here 2 nights with my bf in our 2nd part of Tokyo trip. A nice elderly gentleman helped me with my luggage. Mind you, it's not common for a Japanese man to offer that. Location is far from JR Nippori station, the one you need to take to go Shinjuku and Ikebukuro - 15mins walk. The good - it... More

Very good, cheap and comfortable ryokan. Located very close to both Tokyo Subway and Nippori JR station. Rooms are clean, private and silent. We only had problems with the wi-fi connection (the password on the sheet they gave us was not correct it seems, and the connection was laggy and jumpy overall), but that was a minor issue for us.... I've stayed here twice - once in 2009 and again in Nov 2014. I still think it's the best place to stay in Japan. From the airport, it's an easy 36 minutes to Nippori station by Skyliner. To get to Annex Katsutaro, you walk through a beautiful old village where there's plenty of treats for you to eat or take... More

An absolute fantastic experience! This ryokan is just around the corner of Yanakaginza, a local street with small local shops and eateries. 10 minute walk to Nippori station. We booked a deluxe room for 4 nights, the room is very japanese style with tatami mats on the floor and futons to sleep on. Very clean and neat. It also have... More

It is about 15 min on foot from to Nippori station. To get there, go out the NW exit and follow the small road until it dead ends, turn left and the Ryokan is about 100 m on the left. The walk involves going down some steps and passing through a small open air arcade-like area. Google maps makes it... More

Staying in Ueno, Asakusa

Neighborhood Profile
Ueno, Asakusa
Traces of the history and culture of the Edo (old Tokyo) era remain vividly in Ueno and Asakusa. Spacious Ueno Park is a great place to relax and visit a variety of different museums and galleries. At Ameyoko which starts in front of Ueno station, the grocery stores and clothing shops are crammed alongside fishmongers. It gets particularly busy at the end of the year, when many people go on shopping sprees. The town of Asakusa, developed around Sensoji temple, has many shops selling goods and clothing from old Japan, making it a great place for souvenir hunting. It's also known for various annual festivals, and the whole district gets involved with the huge Sanja Festival in May.
