Old style room very comfortable. We had the ensuite bathroom room and it was perfect. The owner is very helpful. The ryokan is a little far from the main train station though. I really recommend this place to experience a family stay.

We loved our stay in the Ryokan Sawanoya. The location is fantastic, there is so much to explore in the area, and it is really quite charming. Breakfast is basic but substantial and cheap. It would be nice to have a coffee machine instead of instant coffee, but that's ok. The rooms are small of course but perfectly adequate. Our... More

Friendly polite people offering a spacious tranquil environment. The bath area is very relaxing and more or less traditional. Room with bathroom was excellent, we felt as though it was an entire apartment on a smaller scale. The bath/shower room is spacious and 20th century modern. We are returning here soon.

Very decent environment, location of the ryokan is close to Nezu station, walking around the ryokan is very pleasant. The ryokan is very clean and tidy, even the public bathrooms and toilets. The staff is wonderful and the stay is very memorable.

I've been going here several times first by myself and later with my wife. I love "shita-machi" where down to earth Tokioites live. This family owned ryokan is quaint and price very reasonable. But, most rooms are very small and only two rooms have toilet inside the room. Rest is toilet in the corridor. So, you need to be adventurous... More

We stayed at a lot of nice Ryokans in Japan, but Sawanoya was the best of them all. Extremely friendly owners, nice clean tatami rooms with soft mattress a pillow, great (private) hot baths, cheap optional breakfast ... and the rest of Tokyo is easy to get to. Absolutely recommended.

We loved visiting this ryokan. The family who owns this is so warm and welcoming. The rooms are comfortable, but a bit small when the beds are rolled out. But the ambience is well worth it. I would return!

Ojisan and Obasan are very kind. (^_^) The map they do for guests is very easy to understand and Ojisan recommended the places to go kindly. The room is very traditional, clean and comfortable to sleep. I also love the bathroom... very nice!!

I love Sawanoya, I stayed there once and will be back soon. The rooms are lovely and super clean. The Japanese baths are amazing and with a view of the traditional garden. Super romantic. The location is quite but the area is really well connected via public transport. Good for an evening and night rest after exploring Tokyo, or even... More

Staying in Ueno, Asakusa

Neighborhood Profile
Ueno, Asakusa
Traces of the history and culture of the Edo (old Tokyo) era remain vividly in Ueno and Asakusa. Spacious Ueno Park is a great place to relax and visit a variety of different museums and galleries. At Ameyoko which starts in front of Ueno station, the grocery stores and clothing shops are crammed alongside fishmongers. It gets particularly busy at the end of the year, when many people go on shopping sprees. The town of Asakusa, developed around Sensoji temple, has many shops selling goods and clothing from old Japan, making it a great place for souvenir hunting. It's also known for various annual festivals, and the whole district gets involved with the huge Sanja Festival in May.
