I loved every second of our 2 night stay at this gorgeous family run Ryokan. It's located in a quiet, more traditional part of Tokyo and yet still has access to great bars, cafés and restaurants nearby. The staff are very warm, friendly and accommodating and cater well to foreigners. If you're visiting Tokyo and want a traditional ryokan experience... More

We loved the location in the old neighborhood, but still very easy to go around to other places in Tokyo.Great restaurants nearby. The family is very friendly and cool to see the daily life on the streets. Very small rooms, but normal and was nicely decorated and very clean, the bath is great and we loved that it was open and no... More

Ryokan Sawanoya is a lovely traditional japanese hotel in a cosy area in Tokyo! The staff is helpfull and very friendly. We stayed in one of their rooms without private bath, but you will end up using their hot baths instead, so that is no problem. Close to the subway and there are many restaurants just around the corner. We... More

We (2 adults and 1 child) picked this hotel simply because we want to taste the old japanese style hotel, aka Ryokan, on our first trip to Tokyo. I must say this was the shinning point of the whole trip and I continue to miss hotel Sawanoya after I am back. Even though 90% of the guests are foreigners, we... More

Friendly and inviting. My husband and I stayed here for 4 nights to begin our Japanese holiday. It is located close to shops, the metro and lots of interesting sights, including Ueno parklands, in an older more traditional neighbourhood. If you are looking for somewhere to stay just out of Tokyo, but within easy reach, then this is perfect. This... More

We thoroughly enjoyed Ryokan Sawanoya: the Japanese-style facilities, the friendly and helpful staff and the wonderfully interesting neighborhood. Hopefully we will have the opportunity to visit again.

A perfect bond between East and West. The Japanese owners take care to really keep the hotel ryokan authentic, but also to explain the rules to foreigners. If you want to sleep on tatami and futon, have a shower and bath in an authentic japanese bathroom, wear your yukata, enhoy Japanese breakfast, then this is the place to stay in... More

Our family of 5 had 2 rooms for 6 nights and loved it. The large room with bath was fabulous and terrific value. The local area is so interesting and fun to walk around, with lots to see in Yanaka Ginza, and all the temples are very special. Family very helpful. Highly recommend.

I admit, I was apprehensive about booking Sawanoya Ryokan when I read the rooms were smaller (than I was expecting) and I had to share a bathroom. :/ but I am so glad with my choice. Mr Sawanoya and his wife were super accommodating and great hosts. They were loved and respected in their neighborhood and had a map drawn... More

But it's getting even harder to get a long booking here of a few days plus. I guess it's super well known but it's well worth the effort to get a room especially given the local area is so interesting. It is especially popular with family groups such as ours.

Staying in Ueno, Asakusa

Neighborhood Profile
Ueno, Asakusa
Traces of the history and culture of the Edo (old Tokyo) era remain vividly in Ueno and Asakusa. Spacious Ueno Park is a great place to relax and visit a variety of different museums and galleries. At Ameyoko which starts in front of Ueno station, the grocery stores and clothing shops are crammed alongside fishmongers. It gets particularly busy at the end of the year, when many people go on shopping sprees. The town of Asakusa, developed around Sensoji temple, has many shops selling goods and clothing from old Japan, making it a great place for souvenir hunting. It's also known for various annual festivals, and the whole district gets involved with the huge Sanja Festival in May.
