Great atmosphere. Lovely tatami mats and futons. Very clean and quiet. Signs up on the way if you are walking from the station to get there. Very helpful staff. We hired bikes from there to get around Ueno park and they were there on time. Also helped us to locate where all the ski shops were and expended a fair... More

Sweet traditional inn in great walking neighborhood. Great hosts, comfy rooms, awesome baths (my son bathed 3 times in 2 days!). Walking distance to Ueno Park - treat yourself to a meal at Inshotei after a visit to one of many museums or the really wonderful zoo (pandas!). We were in between accommodations on our last day, our host were... More

Ryokan Sawanoya is a perfect Japanese experience. The host/owners could not be more kind, helpful and gracious. The futons and rooms are comfortable. The neighborhood is lovely, quaint, and quiet. The building is convenient to Narita airport, Tokyo subways, beautiful Ueno park, the Ueno zoo , the national museum, and multiple wonderful eating establishments. The communal baths and toilets were... More

Best ryokan in town! Even though the room is not too spacious, it has very comfy bed and futon. The room decor is awesome! Everything is very clean. I enjoyed the private bath so much! Sawanoya is in a great part of Tokyo, Ueno, which has some charming back streets for exploring and is convenient for the subway and travelling anywhere in the city. It has an authentic old Japanese feel with friendly, welcoming, accommodating hosts. Rooms are very comfortable, breakfast tasty, and all in all I would definitely stay there again on a return... Sawanoya Rokyan is located in Tokyo but feels like surrounded by the nostalgic Showa-era atmosphere . The room was small but tidy and clean enough to stay. The best part of Sawanoya was the owner and all his family members are very helpful and kind. They are not only running their Ryokan hostel business but also trying to keep passing... More

Staying in Ueno, Asakusa

Neighborhood Profile
Ueno, Asakusa
Traces of the history and culture of the Edo (old Tokyo) era remain vividly in Ueno and Asakusa. Spacious Ueno Park is a great place to relax and visit a variety of different museums and galleries. At Ameyoko which starts in front of Ueno station, the grocery stores and clothing shops are crammed alongside fishmongers. It gets particularly busy at the end of the year, when many people go on shopping sprees. The town of Asakusa, developed around Sensoji temple, has many shops selling goods and clothing from old Japan, making it a great place for souvenir hunting. It's also known for various annual festivals, and the whole district gets involved with the huge Sanja Festival in May.
