I have stayed here many times. It is my automatic choice whenever I am in Tokyo, most recently earlier this month. It offers unbeatable value. I always get a small single room without bath. I like this best because Japanese hotel bathrooms are always really tiny anyway, and the ryokan has two very nice Japanese baths that are perfect for... More

I just stayed here a few days ago and have to say it was a very comfortable stay. The rooms were clean and had good space for storage. You get complimentary tea. The lobby provided many pamphlets and free drinks. The family was very helpful with directions and made sure you knew where you were going. For those who picture... More

If you are looking for a comfortable, clean, friendly, authentically Japanese place to stay in Tokyo, please choose Ryokan Sawanoya! It is a family-run inn, with a long history of serving both Japanese (in the 50s and 60s) and foreigners (since the 80s if I remember correctly). Beautifully updated/new 'onsen' (shared bath/shower rooms) with small view of Japanese garden. The... More

My nephew and I stayed at the the ryokan last week and after a long day's tour of Tokyo it was great to be able to head back to a calm place each night. The place is located in a quiet residential area and a ten minute walk from the Nezu subway stop. Our room was smallish and we had... More

I and my partner could stay only for one night as the hostel was fully booked. Right after we entered in, I understood why it is like that. It is a very silent, calm and unbelievablly clean ryokan. It is governed by a small japanese family and they are very helpful. However, do not stay more thsn 3 nights if... More

I love this place, it is absolutely amazing. The staff was nice and friendly, the room was spacious and very clean. Not so far away from Ueno and in a lovely and quiet area. I hope to return soon! It was a real japanese experience.

I stayed 3 nights and the place is wonderfull! Nice area (lot of temples around and Ueno park), easy access with transport and to visit Tokyo. I loved the 2 japanese bath and the tea in the room. And also the "kimono" provided to sleep. The bedroom was really confortable, particulary with the AC, and clean. Also all the ryokan... More

As said, a bit far from the city centre but it is not too difficult to find the way soon enough. Room is great, service is fantastic and everything is acceptable. The neighbourhood is great to walk around with genuine old town feel and great view. I will definitely recommend this place. Also the bath is great :D

This is a lovely Ryokan with very friendly and helpful staff who also speak good English. The Japanese style rooms were simple but nice and I really enjoyed the baths (both the round and rectangular versions!). The whole experience was relaxing, quiet and enjoyable. There is also free coffee and iced water available and also green tea in the rooms.... More

How to begin?! We absolutely LOVED this place and the Sawa family who owns and operates it. It is located in a more residential neighborhood and close to Ueno station. It was easy to find and we loved the quiet after our days of exploring other parts of Tokyo. There are many temples in the area & we walked in... More
