The ryokan is located in a residential area, about 10-15 min walk from Ueno station (5 min taxi). It is run by a family who takes great care of guests. We stayed there for 4 nights in one of their room with private bathroom. Although the building is old, it kept very clean. (They clean room and change towels everyday.)... More

We've just stayed here and really enjoyed our stay. The location is off the main drag of Ueno in a quiet suburban street, but still only 15 minutes walk from the action (ie, good for a quiet stay). The room was clean and a good size, and I recommend paying the additional extra to go for a full sized room... More

Was disappointed by the bedding. It just didn't seem clean. The comforters were very old and gross. They were dated from the 80s or 90s, and someone had obviously spilled coffee on one of ours and it left a disgusting stain. In Japan they tend to put a fitted sheet/douvet cover over the bedding, so we weren't actually touching it,... More

This hotel is about a 10 minute walk from Ueno Station and is therefore in a very quiet location. We had a room with a private bathroom which was very comfortable and clean. In addition to having free wifi in your room there is also a computer and printer available in the communal room. There are plenty of places to... More

We stayed in a family room at Katsutaro. Immaculately clean and the most comfortable futons we slept on for our entire trip to Japan. The location is brilliant. Wonderful for our children to be able to walk down to Ueno Park to visit the zoo. Easy walk to Ueno Station and Okachimachi markets as well as the galleries and museum.... More

This hotel maybe far from Ueno station but can walk. The neighborhood is very quite and hotel like a home big room and big bathroom. The futon very comfortable. And they have a laundry there don't go out to find a shop. I love this hotel.

We stayed here in 2012 during the winter months. Owner was friendly and rooms were good. Good sleep every night. A short walk away was a good place for coffee. Would recommend it to anyone looking for a nice affordable stay in Ueno.

I agree with all the previous comments and would like to add that the ryokan has a washer/dryer. 300 yen for the washer (supplies soap) and the dryer is free. Also a common fridge is handy. Found the bed to be very comfortable.....daily maid service. I would recommend giving a miss to a restaurant located just down the road towards... More

After the hustle and bustle of the majority of Tokyo, the neighborhood of the Ryokan Katsutaro is like an oasis of quiet and calm but it's also very close to 2 metro stations for easy access to that hustle and bustle. It is also located very near to the old district with good museums close by. The ryokan is typical... More

This ryokan was very cute and quaint! It was very reasonably priced and it had great services. The traditional Japanese room we stayed in was huge and, thus, we had heaps of room for our luggage and buys. It is in a GREAT location! There are two stations that are in a reasonable walking distance, ueno and nezu. It is... More

Staying in Ueno, Asakusa

Neighborhood Profile
Ueno, Asakusa
Traces of the history and culture of the Edo (old Tokyo) era remain vividly in Ueno and Asakusa. Spacious Ueno Park is a great place to relax and visit a variety of different museums and galleries. At Ameyoko which starts in front of Ueno station, the grocery stores and clothing shops are crammed alongside fishmongers. It gets particularly busy at the end of the year, when many people go on shopping sprees. The town of Asakusa, developed around Sensoji temple, has many shops selling goods and clothing from old Japan, making it a great place for souvenir hunting. It's also known for various annual festivals, and the whole district gets involved with the huge Sanja Festival in May.
