My partner and i have just had a 2 night stay at the sportsman inn and have to say we enjoyed our stay. We bought a voucher for 2 nights b&b and a 3 course meal on the first night. When we arrived we were greeted by friendly staff and were immediately made to feel welcome. I have to agree... More

Myself and my partner have just stayed here for the bank holiday, amazing pub and stay for the price. Great value for money! The rooms are a bit dated but are clean. The shower is wet and warm which is luxury after a long walk or bike. The food... Well, what can I say!! It was soooooo good. Quite pricey... More

Just like the previous reviewers, we found the pub could do with some money spending on it - we also stayed in room 3, which was the smallest room we've ever stayed in. My first impression was 'Get me out of here!' but I'm glad we persisted. The bed was comfy and clean, and the evening meal was exceptional (though... More

It was as we expected in that it could do with a refurbishment ( I believe ? owned by Wainwrights Brewery ? ) but it was comfortable and clean and ideal for walkers and a short stay, the food was good as were the staff, very friendly and helpful. had a deal for two nights stayed for three., not three... We stayed on a 2 night deal and found the place had had a lot of previous bad press but gave it a go. Stayed in room 3 which was very small with en suite the room was clean but in desperate need of a re vamp. The en suite was just to small the shower base was rusty and you... More

On arrival we found out our booking was for the day after but the landlord was happy to accommodate us without a fuss. The beer garden was beautifully sunny and the surrounding environment is stunning. Had a fabulous meal and really enjoyed our stay which was excellent value for money. Will definitely return to the area again and would stay... More

I have read previous reviews about The Sportsman and have my own opinion. This pub is the ideal walkers rest location, set just near the start of the trail for Kinder Scout, just far enough outside Hayfield village to be quietly off the well trodden track. The situation is charming, actually beautiful after the stresses of the city. It is... More

We stopped for a small libation be forcing doing the Kinder Scout walk. The pub is a great rendezvous point, but it seems dark and dinghy. It is as if it is making a good income from the local camp site and dies not need to try any harder. If this is the case, it is unfortunate, because with a... More

we stayed in the Sportsmans for two nights while working nearby. We very quickly renamed the landlord "Basil" as he obviously based his management style on Mr Fawlty. The beer was very expensive, the food although very average was incredibly expensive, my room, 3, was cold and damp, my friends room upstairs, had no loo or tv, the main saving... More

Having read the previous reviews I was a little apprehensive. Management of the inn is carried out by two people. We were greeted by Paul, who could not do enough for us and was ver helpful in advising us of the locality and things to do. I agree it is in need of updating but Paul told us that they... More
