The mattress needs a replacement. Everything else is just fantastic. Jenny and her husband are an amazing hosts. Breakfast was delicious! Easy walk from the Robin Hood pub where you can get a nice dinner.

This was our first stop when walking Hadrian's wall. Struan and Jenny kindly stored out bags which we dropped off a day early, whilst we spent time in Newcastle. Our room was enormouse with a large ensuite containing a bath. The room had many interesting features and furniture which added to the ambience. The bed did have a soft mattress... More

The bed could do with a replacement of the mattress. The present mattress - as another reviewer already stated - must date from Emperor Hadrian's time. It is an impertinence for any walker who needs a good night's sleep after a long walk. Breakfast was fine, a homebaked bred was a treat.

We loved the place. It would have got 5 stars if some of the fixtures and fittings had been in a bit of a better condition. That being said, it was perfectly comfortable and our hosts went out of their way to accomodate us. They even closed two of the five rooms so we could all have a private bathroom!... More

Such a warm welcome! The rooms were fab? Food was excellent Value at the brewery next door we will defo be returning. A few others from our group stayed at other local b&bs nearby but I think we got the best of them all.

Although I agree that the breakfast at this B+B was great in the true English manner, our bed was apparently from emperor Hadrian's times. Spent the most uncomfortable night of our trip here. Also, the house could do with a good scrubbing. Main photo is of Matfen Hall which is a different establishment. We feel let down by Tripadvisor contributors... More

Very comfortable, country room. Friendly hosts and a good breakfast. Wonderful quiet location. Great brewery right next door for meals (or a drink). It was our second stay here and I would certainly go back.

We booked all the rooms with extras on the floor! Struan and Jenny accommodated all of us which was just great. The huge dining room and fabulous breakfast topped off our weekend perfectly. Hope to return soon Thank you

Matfen High House is about a mile from Robin Hood Inn which is on the Hadrian's wall trail. You walk next to fields and through a woodland, over streams and there stands Matfen House. We received a warm welcome and had a very large and comfortable bedroom with French period furnishings. Jenny provided an excellent breakfast in the morning which... More
