This hotel was part of a larger tour I booked to Eater Island this past March. The pictures of the rooms / grounds looked beautiful on the website, but I was a bit concerned about staying here based on some of the mediocre reviews after the hotel's recent renovation. However, it seems like they had worked out most of the... More

After reading a recent review, we were concerned about the many problems at the hotel, namely the slow and non-responsive service / management. Perhaps the management took the comments to heart because our experience has been excellent. The management and all staff have been warm, welcoming and extremely helpful. The hotel design (from the restaurant, the lobby, to the gorgeous... More

Having lived on a remote island in years past we understand some of the limitations when visiting a place such as Easter Island. However, we were very impressed with the quality of our lodgings, the freshness of the food and the general support offered by the staff at Hotel Hangaroa. The architecture is so interesting and the public areas of... More

Recently revisted Easter Island after 23 years. What a difference. At the site of the old hotel all that remains are the two trees that used to be in the courtyard. And in its place is a magnificent hotel - wonderfully designed to reflect the heritage of Rapa Nui. The rooms are wonderful in design and have great patios looking... More

Hotel Hangaroa is a classic instance of “good hardware let down by bad software”. The design, facilities and location are almost flawless – while the management, pricing, bill handling and service are a nightmare. In almost 40 years of international travel I have never seen a worse-run establishment than this masquerading as a five-star hotel. First, the good. This new... More

I'm not sure this place could be much better. It's beautiful. Well-kept. The staff are always available and very nice. The meals are consistantly outstanding. We paid for the premium that included lunch and dinner and it turned out to be a great deal, given how great the food was, and how expensive food is in the town. This hotel... More

We stayed at Hangaroa for five nights. You can read about our entire trip to Chile in my trip report. This hotel/resort is not ready for prime time. This would be okay if it wasn't already charging as if it was a five-star resort. Perhaps it will be at some point, but right now, it is not. Before I get... More

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
The Hangaroa Eco Village & Spa, the newest hotel property on Easter Island and located just a 5-minute walk from the island's only town, Hanga Roa. The Hangaroa Eco Village & Spa is the fulfillment of an ambitious and idealistic project created by a group of developers and designers seeking to create an integral tourism property based on sustainability, Easter Island's rich culture, and the local Rapa Nui community. Easter Island is one of the most mysterious destinations on Earth, well known for its iconic stone moai statues. It is also the most remote inhabited island in the world, located in the center of the Pacific Ocean, or in Rapa Nui, Te Pito o Henua, translated as the "Navel of the World," or "Land's End." The Hangaroa Eco Village & Spa features 75 elegant and smartly decorated rooms, the Poerava and Kaloa restaurants, the deluxe Manavai Spa, an outdoor swimming pool and its Vaikoa bar, a reading room and excursion center, a 60-person auditorium featuring cultural and art films, and a 300-person conference space for cultural seminars, dance and music presentations, and corporate meetings. The Hangaroa sits high on a dramatic, steep-sloped cliff facing the Pacific Ocean, and all guestrooms boast panoramic windows and terraces with sea views. The Hangaroa Eco Village & Spa offers "B&B" rates for lodging and breakfast only, and "Premium" packages that include lodging, excursions and all meals and beverages. Each detail of the hotel's architectural design and functionality is cutting edge. Inspired by the Orongo ceremonial village and site of the island's Bird Man ritual, all of the Hangaroa's walls are curvilinear and topped with grass roofs, and favor natural light and landscaping of local flora that allow the hotel to artfully blend into its natural environment. The Hangaroa's 500-square-foot Kainga double rooms and 800-square-foot Ma'Unga suites are curvy, insular and organic, softly lit by LED lights and made of volcanic rock, clay and wood. Bathrooms feature wash basins carved from volcanic rock, circular mosiac-tiled showers, and hand-crafted freestanding soak tubs made of dark clay. Cool, relaxing, and sophisticated in design, guestrooms also boast state-of-the-art technology that saves on water and electricity consumption, minimizes noise, and features a bedside bioswitch that when flipped frees the room of electromagnetic fields for a pollution-free environment. The hotel's lounge spaces, reading room and lobby are designed to resemble a traditional casa bote, a traditional Rapa Nui house that appears as an upside-down canoe. Luxurious and utterly stylish interiors designed by renown Chilean interior designer Paula Gutierrez feature custom-built furniture, Polynesian prints and fuchsia, sky blue, tangerine and emerald fabrics contrasted against stone and dark-earth clay walls and floors, and stately, polished cypress tree trunk pillars. Outside, a heated pool and expansive pebbled patio face out toward the sea, surrounded by lush flowers, palms, grass and sand. COMMITMENT TO ENVIRONMENT & THE LOCAL COMMUNITY: As the most remote inhabited land in the world, few destinations on the planet are as ecologically and culturally sensitive as Easter Island. The Hangaroa Eco Village & Spa has therefore incorporated advanced technology to minimize impact on the island and its people, including energy-saving measures, water filtration systems that return water pure back to the environment, waste recycling programs, and the use of organic and locally sourced food products. The Hangaroa Eco Village & Spa philosophy is to bring the community into the project. More than 75% of the hotel's staff members are ethnic Rapa Nui, and the Hangaroa has developed a series of educational and professional training programs that also seek to maintain and conjoin the Rapa Nui's beliefs, rites and traditions. The Rapa Nui hotel staff are people who are warm and welcoming and who have a spiritual bond with their ancestral culture, providing guests with the most gracious Polynesian hospitality possible, a hospitality that comes from the heart. The Hangaroa will also donate funds to local educational programs and environmental causes every year. EXCURSIONS: As part of the Hangaroa Eco Village & Spa's desire to give back to the local community, the hotel subcontracts the outstanding local tour company Mahinatur, with 25 years' experience guiding travelers on Easter Island. Mahintur's excursions are soulful experiences that put visitors up close to the Rapa Nui culture and the people themselves, along with visiting highlights such as the Rano Raraku quarry, the visually stunning Ahu Tongariki with 15 standing moais, the breathtaking Rano Kau volcanic crater that measures 1.6 km in diameter. Guests may opt also to unwind on the white sands of Anakena Beach, take a leisurely bike ride, explore town, or scuba dive in some of the most extraordinarily clear waters in the world with up to 50 meters of visibility. MANAVAI SPA The Hangaroa Eco Village's Manavai Spa is a haven of relaxation and rejuvenation, with holistic and high-tech, transformational treatments that take into consideration ancestral techniques of the Rapa Nui. In addition to a menu of massage, body treatments and facials, the Manavai Spa offers a sand sauna that mimics an ancestral technique traditionally used for spiritual cleansing. There is also a Kneipp pool and two outdoor Jacuzzis. The Hangaroa also has an outdoor swimming pool. ... more   less
