Having stayed mostly in 5 star or better properties in many different countries, I'll rate this property as one among the best boutique hotels I have stayed till date. Excellent service, clean rooms and great food. Simply put, fantastic property and perhaps the best choice in Chettinad!

Well maintained and in the heart of Karaikudi, this hospitable and well furbished hotel was a delight. The rooms were comfortable and the staff friendly and helpful. A special mention must be made for the excellent Chettinad food. Being off season, there were few guests and so we had the privilege of discussing the menu and getting what we wanted.... More

I stayed here for a round trip for one night and it was a definite controversal beatutiful stay to the vicinity. the pool was absolutely amazing, Hotel is said to be used by famous Indian actors when they are filming near the place. I can't thank the staff enough for their wonderful service and help. They went out of their way to help us out when my Father had accident. The local cuisine is fantastic. However, they also make fantastic chicken sandwiches.

The Bangala is an old Chettinad-style house converted perfectly into a hotel. It is a property with a lot of personality and charm. The rooms are all well-appointed, and the decor of the place is quaint and unique. The service is unfailingly thoughtful and welcoming. The food is excellent. Do visit Bangala if you have the chance.

How one wishes there were more of this sort of hotel in the south (it seems easier to find heritage hotels in the north ). Very difficult to fault the set up ,well there was a Canadian coach party that passed through but as we always travel in India with a car and driver tours are my particular bête noir.... More

We stayed at The Bangala for 1 night as part of our Travel Indochina Secrets of the South Tour. This was our base for visiting the Chettinad Mansions and surrounds but it was the Building, Staff and Food that won our hearts. One of the most enjoyable and hospitable hotels that we stayed at in India. Nothing was too much... More

The place is tastefully done, the hospitality remarkable. On knowing i was bringing my old mother Mrs. Meyappan had taken special care to give us a room on the ground floor with all amenities. As vegetarians i thought we would have limited choice with respect to food, but the Head Chef Mr. Raman prepared especially for us some great soups... More

My husband and I spent 2 nights at the lovely Bangala on our recent revisit to Tamil Nadu. We had long been interested in the area with its interesting architecture, food and history, and when I discovered the Bangala we immediately decided to visit on our way from Coonoor to Pondicherry. Long dusty, interest packed drives to and from. The... More

This mansion is lovely with an open-air restaurant, a well-tended garden, and a great swimming pool. I am not a "sunner," so it was with great excitement that I found poolside chaise in the shade. Of course, there are places in the sun too. It's the shade that's difficult to find. The room was spacious and clean. The shower was... More

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
The Bangala is a heritage hotel in Karaikudi, the heart of Chettinad. Now in its 12th year, it is renowned for its local cuisine and warm hospitality. All rooms are air conditioned and with attached bathrooms. Amenities include a swimming pool, gym, massage center , library, cycling, etc. Chettinad is a small area accessible from Madurai, Trichy, Tanjore and Rameswaram. It is the homeland of a Nattukottai Chettiar community, a community that made huge fortunes in south east Asia during colonial rule. These fortunes were used to build amazing mansions over the past 200 years, that evolved in style and scale, and needs to be seen to be appreciated. It is a little known destination but should not be missed. ... more   less
