You don't feel welcome at Saratha Vilas Heritage Hotel. The two owners, Michel and Bernard, expat French architects, have done a very good job in restoring one of the old mansions in Chettinad but have obviously not adopted the traditional indian warmth and hospitality. We arrived in the afternoon of a very hot day in March and while doing our... More

We spent 2 nights at this Chettiar Mansion which has been lovingly restored by Michel and Bernard. You enter the mansion from a dooway on the street in a sleepy village and enter in to another world. The mansion is full of beautiful artefacts, open space, nice seating areas and comfortable furniture. We had booked a Heritage Room and were... More

Spent 2 nights and visited the village where Saratha Vilas is situated called Kothamangalam meeting some very nice welcoming folk. This is a small place so it is easy to walk around and see life in a rural village and to admire some of the other mansions built with wealth created by the Chettiars. You can go to nearby villages... More

We spent 2 nights here on our recent trip to south India and were not disappointed. It is a beautifully renovated mansion with comfortable rooms decorated in Chettinad style. The meals were excellent, the staff friendly and helpful and the owners always willing to talk about the area and their lovely house. 2 nights were not enough.

It's one year ago that my then 17 year old daughter and I spent 4 nights here and were treated to superb food and service. We rode our bikes, checked out antiques, watched how to make tiles, spent hours looking at fabrics which we purchased, talked to a lovely lady teaching the local children English and visited a few temples.... If you are looking to have the rare and worthwhile experience of staying in a Chettinad mansion within a village then you could not do better than to book a room in this special house. It is special because your hosts, two French architects with a passion for the Chettinad region and its wonderful buildings, have managed to craft a... More

Beautiful hotel with antique furniture and deco. Peaceful location. Spacious rooms. The staff are very friendly and helpful. We preferred to have Chettinad delicacies for breakfast and they served nice local dishes like appams, paniyarams and chicken chetinad etc. The driver they arranged was extremely friendly and knowledgeable of chetinad area. The hosts have excellent info about the place, chettinad... More

An elegant Chettinad mansion, beautifully restored by the owners, two French architects. Michel was really helpful in telling us what to see and where and how to see it, providing a brochure (in French, of course) and maps of the village and the surrounding area - and a fascinating and rewarding area it is too. We stayed two nights -... More

We were driving ourselves to Chettinad and, hot and tired, had great difficulty locating this hotel so it was with great relief that we spotted the discreet portal. We were soon swept up into the cool splendour of Saratha Vilas and not a little embarrassed as three sweet women in saris spirited our heavy luggage away from us. To arrive... More

Saratha Vilas, is fairly the recent addition to the growing list of properties of Chettiars that are being converted into Homestays/Hotels: as one would perceive them to be. But the interesting thing is, Saratha Vilas, is what it is, for the sheer dint and diligence of two French Architects: Michele and Bernard, who are virtually repositories of locale insights much...
