My sister and our 2 children (ages 2 and 3) stayed here . The welcome we received on entrance was amazing . A good old Scottish welcome . Couldn't fault it . The host was so lovely and made us feel all right at home . The room itself was of adequate size . Beds were comfy . It was... More

My wife and I along with our two dogs spent two lovely nights at The Allan Ramsay, when we arrived we were warmly welcomed and shown our room, the bed was just right, not too firm or to soft, the shower room small but ample for the two nights we were staying. Both nights we ate in the inn, the... More

walked in from Balerno and it was a bit wet outside but we where not really made to feel very welcome appreciate that hillwalkers can be a bit more messy and have wet clothing etc. We where looking forward to some home made warming Scottish fare only too be told that at lunch times they only serve a tapas menu!... Hi Jerome Thanks for posting your review. I'm glad you pointed out that you had just walked over the Pentland Hills and were soaking wet - it was probably one of the worst days weather we have had for a while in July!! I agree that on a day such as that a hearty meal would have been more appropriate.... More

I have been visiting the Allan Ramsay regularly over the past 35 years, and have witnessed its character being gradually chipped away over the years as proprietors came and went. Now largely open plan, with the ever flashing lights of the fruit machine visible throughout the pub, the old coaching inn character is only hanging on by a thread. One... More

Thank you for your comments. They are really useful. I'm pleased to say we have a new exciting menu underway from 12th June keeping traditional pub fayre but adding new dishes as well. The hotel is undergoing a steady transformation to bring it back to its unrivalled position as a coaching inn of great repute. This takes time. Bearing in... More

I stayed at the Allan Ramsay for one night as part of a hiking trip. I got a friendly greeting from Anna, who kindly looked after me for meals as well- many thanks. Room one is a bright, functional single room with a good bathroom. The inside of the pub itself is fabulous, and all the better for an open... More

I was travelling around the UK with my girlfriend when we decided to make a stop in our journey to rest a little. We were already near Edinburgh, but the small village of Carlops, and its only hotel, the Allan Ramsay Hotel, were our option for the night. And that was a good call! The room wasn't anything special, and... More

Stopped here on the way up to Edinburgh for the rugby with my wife. Arrived with a great welcome from Elaine who check us in and made dinner reservations for us. Kenny behind the bar was equally friendly as we had a few drinks. The room was large and comfortable. Food was nice and the stay was a good memory... More

I recently stayed here for a few nights a week as I was working in nearby Penicuik. As other reviews have stated, this little hotel was recently refurbished. There are only four rooms but each one is modestly appointed and more than satisfactory. Below, there is a decent pub with a roaring open fire, good food, and pleasant atmosphere. The... More
