It's a tough journey to get to Coffee Bay from Umtata, but it's worth to do this trip. Coffee Shack is situated in the lovely Coffee Bay with amongst lush and green hills. The charm of this place lays in its remoteness and real African flair. I stayed in a small but tidy and cosy private room. The shared bathroom... More

After spending a while travelling around S.A and staying in backpackers along the way, I have to say this place is my favourite!! Such a chilled out place with all the amenities of other backpackers, but with some added extras thrown in. A friendly welcome on arrival, and what better way to do that than to have a quick tour... Thanks for the positive review. It is always a pleasure to see guests have enjoyed themselves and have taken advantage of our various activities on offer, particularly the surfing lessons which is our favourite. Thank you for pointing our the quieter rooms on the otherside, they are always a good option for those who want a little more space. Cheers... More

This is the best hostel in South Africa, despite me sleeping there on hard ground with a crappy tent, I've never felt so at home. The location, the people, and the fact that there is always an activity (organized or not) going makes it great.

This hostel was a last minute booking over the phone from my reserve in Port Elizabeth. Me and 4 friends were travelling up and spending a couple of days there. I have stayed in many hostels and hotels around the world, but this was certainly one of my favourites. The staff were always friendly and the guests were just as... More

We stayed at Coffee Shack just for 2 night, but it was absolutely worth it. Strongly recommend staying at the huts, where you get the feeling of the local culture. The catering service is delicious, and Sunday's fee diner was such a nicesurprise. Finally, the laid back ambience of this place is one in a million. Definitely worth going if... More

Great value for money, beautiful position within walking distance of the beach. Lots of activities, nice bar. Cheap surf lessons. Definitely one of the best hostels i've stayed in within South Africa. I highly recommend a visit.

I spent 1 night at Coffee Shack on my road trip from Durban to Cape Town and I have to say it was just amazing. Their shuttle conveniently picks you up in Umtata and takes you straight to Coffee Shack's door. They are located right on the beach and there was constantly stuff happening from the moment we got there.... More

This place was definitely our highlight of South Africa. And this hostel made it! The location is amazing! It's set on it's own little bay where a little river meets the beach. The river is tidal and some of the rooms are over the other side of this river. I think these were the doubles though (dorms are closer to... More

Not only will you be given a guided tour and a welcome drink (which you MUST drink with your left hand), you’re introduced to staff members and invited out to dinner with other guests. Whether it’s munching curry at the hostel or... More
