Brilliant location, breathtaking views, secluded with own trout dam. Ideal to get away from it all. Gas geysers, lamps, fridge and chest freezer. No elektrisity. Great walks, swimming, vegetation and wildlife ( baboons and eland) and smaller animals/birds. Nice cycling to reserve entrance and back (uphill) for a good workout. Reception store have basic groceries. Friendly staff. Maintenance at cottage... More

The cottage sleeps ten and is very basic. It is quite a distance away from the chalets and camp sites and quite secluded which is great! It has its own trout dam which only guests staying in Simes cottage may use. There is no electricity whatsoever and gas geysers, a gas stove and gas lanterns are provided. The staff also... More

A beautiful weekend camping at Lotheni with the family. Friendly and helpful staff, exciting walks, beautiful waterfalls. Apparently there is a lovely walk to yellowwood caves but we didn't have time to visit so there will need to be a return visit.. Next time I want to try get in at Simes Cottage.

We arrived there on our way to Sani Pass. The name of Lotheni was given us by Clive from the Nottingham Road Hotel, and I became curious. The area is beautiful, no doubt about it. And definitely quiet and remote. If you only have the time for one place in the Drakensberg Mountains, choose Royal Natal National Park. It seems... More

Lotheni is one of KZN's hidden gems, offering incredible scenery, comfortable accommodation and walks to suit a range of abilities. The park boast a range of wildlife, from eland to baboons, as well many birds of prey. Couldn't recommend it highly enough!

Lotheni is a quiet nature reserve set at the foot of the Drakensberg escarpment with a view of the Southern side of the Giants Castle. It is down a 45km dirt road, which is well graded and easy to drive in a high-clearance vehicle. There are some stony patches and an ordinary sedan can do it as long as you... More

Expect spartan but comfy accommodation (that does need a redo to be honest) in breathtaking mountain surrounds. But considering the low rates its a pretty fair deal. R450 per night for 2 - 3 peeps is really not bad. At Giant's Castle you will pay at least double (yes the accommodation is of a better quality but the views are... More

The mountains were extremely beautiful and the river adds to great photos. The rooms are basic but sufficiently equipped. There are NO plug points so NO charging equipment (chalets)... Good place for hikers that can do the 12km hikes - the 2km is nice too. For fishing, you have to stay at simes cottage (private dam) because the river is... More

I would think one off the most beatifull camping sites in the world. The road there is rough and about 45 km dirt road where you need a rugged vehicle to get there.Probably because off the road and the remoteness not many campers but that suits us because we always get place. Also 12 chalets and 2 cottages with hot gass... Collection of thatched huts for 2-4 people and two larger individual stonebuilt cottages on a KZN wildlife reserve in the southern drakensburg. Very beautiful spot 50km from nearest town. Access roads fairly rough so need a rugged vehicle to get here but definately worth it. All huts have hot and cold water with basic but functional bathrooms, gas for cooking,... More
