Tobaya is a traditional style ryokan in a quiet part of Hikone. It is about 15 mins walk from the station. The hosts were very welcoming and I was given a large room (big enough for 4 people) on the second floor in the front overlooking the streetscape - local fishmonger and other small shops. The ryokan is very clean and has a lovely ambience and the shared amenities, toilets and bathrooms are spotless. The traditional Japanese breakfast is substantial and tasty. The owner is very kind and friendly and offered to drive me to the station for an early train.

Great place in a quiet neighbourhood - was nice to get away from the big cities for a night. Huge rooms (won't find anything that size and that cheap in Tokyo or Kyoto!), with a great (shared) bath. The staff were very friendly and tremendously helpful - they even gave us a lift to the train station. Within walking distance from Hikone Castle.

This traditional ryokan has been going since the 1880's. Japanese style rooms with tatami mats & futons, including modern facilities, are very comfortable. Toilets & bathrooms are shared. There is a traditional onsen bath, which you can lock the door so its private. The owner was lovely, extremely helpful & like others, gave us a lift to the train station on leaving. The ryokan is 5-7 mins walk from the train station & 10 minutes to the castle.

Stayed with my boyfriend for sightseeing. People here was so nice and the location is good. Ten minute walking to Hikone castle. The building is old but inside is nice and clean. I will definitely use here again .

Tobaya Ryokan is a beautiful traditional Japanese inn, which is family-oriented, homely, clean, has free wifi and is near to a bank and the main shopping street. The best thing about our stay there was the food and the hospitality - we were given a delicious dinner and breakfast of authentic home cooking, which was very good value. Although the staff do not speak much English, they are very attentive and make every effort to communicate with you. The room we were given was not ensuite, so we had to walk downstairs to the bathroom (just one minute walk away), but the bathroom contained a fantastic traditional Japanese bath which added to the experience.

As with the other English reviewers, our group of 6 was picked up by a very nice man (owner?) at the train station in a van. After traveling for 10 days by train through Japan with 2 toddlers this was an enormous treat. He immediately drove us to the castle where we spent the day and later pick us up at another spot near the castle. He also drove us to Lake Biwa to watch the sunset. When we got to the ryokan, we found our futons made up (kids were already asleep), our luggage in the rooms and dinner soon ready to arrive. The next day after breakfasting at the inn, he drove us around town a little. He was rightfully proud of Hikone, and dropped us in an area where we could also do a little shopping. When it was time to catch our train, he picked us up again bringing us our luggage and took us to the trains station. This was the best service I have ever received anywhere in over 40 years of traveling world-wide. and I truly couldn’t thank him enough.

My sister and I stayed 2 nights and were sad to leave. We were collected from the Train Station and then dropped off there when we left. When we decided to go sightseeing to the castle, without asking they brought the van and took us to the start of the walk to the castle, also making sure we had an umbrella with us. Our dinners were excellent and plentiful. The owners and staff are all helpful and friendly. We don't speak much Japanese but that wasn't a problem. Everything is clean and comfortable. We hope to send many friends there as we recounted our great experience to them. In fact we hope to visit again.

The Tobaya Ryokan has nice, traditional rooms and ofuro. The best thing about this ryokan, however, is the service. The owner is very friendly, welcoming and more than happy to do pick-ups and drop-offs to places like Hikone Castle and the train station. He was also happy for me to borrow a bike and explore.
