This 椎葉山荘 Shiibasanso ryokan is probably one of the most expensive ones in Ureshino. It is a beautiful little ryokan next to the stream. I don't think it will ever be crowded as it is quite pricey and tour groups are unlikely to come here (which is a good thing). The onsens are great and never too crowded. I find... More

I had visited the public onsen last year and saw this ryokan situated beside it at that time. It looked so lovely that I told myself I had to come and stay one night. When my husband and I were in Fukuoka in November this year, we rented a car to drive to Shiibasanso. It is an easy 1.5 hours'... More

Shiibasanso is a place where westerners can feel comfortable while gaining a real Japanese style experience. The natural hot springs are wonderful, with indoor and outdoor pools. Guests bathe, in traditional style, in the nude; however for modern sensibilities, there are separate areas for men and women. There are two dining areas, one for overnight guests which is heavily staffed,... More

The rooms at this hotel were huge, with a separate sitting area doubling as the Japanese-style bedroom in the evening, and a Western-style bedroom next door. There's a kitchenette available, complete with mini-fridge, microwave and a two-burner electric stove. Great Wi-Fi speeds were available in the room. The bathroom was a dream which came with a cypress wood bathtub -... More

The hotel is located amid of the forest (very natural). The main onsen bath is separated from the main buiding which is very beautiful. Borth dinner and breakfast are various and very delicious. The staffs are very friendly, but they couldn't speak English very well. Strongly recommended for the traveler who is looking for Japanese accomodation style.
