We stayed for 2 nights, unfortunately on the secon day the weather was bad, so we made an excursion to the mount unzen disaster memorial hall and Shimabara castle. The hotel - even for two Swiss - was remarkably in its architectural "Chalet-style". The staff extremely friendly and attentif. Highly recommendable. René & Co

Stayed at this hotel for 1 night in December. Getting up to the hotel is about a 30~40 min ride up the mountain from the city but well worth the ride. We drove here by a rented car but there seems to be a public bus you can take from the city. At night, it can get pretty dark so... More

We stayed one night. This is an old style European hotel which is unusual in Japan. The hotel is pleasant, with a nostalgia of days gone by, with a billiard room and an old library. The room is of good size, with decent toiletries. The French dinner was good, though it cannot be called truly French. This lack of identity... More

Unzen Kanko Hotel is probably the best classic hotel in Japan. Opened in 1935 in the first national park, this place has been our favorite family vacation destination. Rooms became more comfortable after the renovation, but the charm of this hotel is unchanged.

4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 17, 2014

The building is a stunning example of Japanese-European style which reflects the history of Nagasaki. There is no lift, so it is not recommended for elderly or disabled guests. The room was tiny but pleasantly furnished. Throughout the building, the old Bar, Library, Billiard Room and even the Smoking Room are of some interest. However, we were dismayed to find... More

My husband was the C.O. on the Naval Base in Sasebo Japan. We are American and were so fortunate to spent our Honeymoon at Unzen Kanko Hotel 33 years ago. It was fabulous then and I'm sure it is even more fantastic now! We would love to revisit again some day.
