My boyfriend + i went to Chikuma City knowing nothing and returning loving every minute of it. Kamesei Ryokan, a family-run inn, gave us the warmest hospitality we could ever have expected - with a perfect location, lovely room with many essential amenities, the patience and care of Tyler and his family, the well kept gardens and onsen, the beautiful... Kamesei has nice, well-kept facilities but what makes it a great place to stay is the hospitality of the host and his family. They are incredibly helpful and accommodating, and the Kamesei is a great choice in a pretty little onsen town easily accessible by rail. Plus the food is fantastic. You must, must have dinner there if you stay.

We had never been to a Ryokan before let alone an Onsen, so we didn't know what to expect. Having now been away from it for three ways we miss it terribly, and yearn to go back! That is largely due to the wonderful hospitality and support from the Manager Tyler and his wonderful family. The Ryokan is situation in... More

We stayed at this traditional Japanese inn towards the end of our 10 day trip and it was by far our most memorable experience. We were welcomed with family style hospitality from the start to the end of our stay courtesy of Tyler who picked us up from the train station and gave us a locals insight into the local... More

Enjoyed very much the Ryokan experience, especially the onsen. Tyler had been very helpful in advising what to see and how to get there. That's the wonders of Ryokans, the personal touch.

We've never had an actual "ryokan" experience, so this was our first one! We loved it - the atmosphere, our room with the tatami mat, and the onsen. We especially loved the family bath (outdoor) and we're lucky enough to enjoy it several times for free (being winter). If you go, you've to try the kaiseki dinner (at least once)!... More

This ryokan has fabulous hot spring baths, both outside and inside. It's quite traditional, with mats on the floors and traditional Japanese meals available, although it was more modern than I was anticipating. Tyler, the American who runs the ryokan with his Japanese wife, is extremely helpful and helped us work out how to get all over the Nagano area.... More

cityOfangels-san, Thank you for coming to our traditional onsen ryokan. We are glad you enjoyed the classic ambience of our inn. A lot ryokans have torn down their wooden buildings and built multi-story concrete-steel boxes. Kamesei Ryokan still has most of our original wood buildings in tact, with the central garden and koi pond and watari-roka passageway to the semi-detached... More

This was one of our most memorable and favorite vacations ever. Tyler and family was a good reason for that. He was super accommodating to us as vegans. Furthermore, it was a lovely setting for an onsen, in a quaint town. We look very forward to returning someday soon.

HemanB-san, Thank you for making Kamesei Ryokan one of the stops during your vacation. And thank you for all of your suggestions on how to better prepare vegan meals. Our chef has incorporated many of your ideas for other vegan guests since then. Travelling in Japan can be tricky for people with dietary restrictions, but we try to be not... More

Me and my dad was backpacking in japan for 9 days and this is our first place to spend a night. The place was filled with unique ancient japanese atmosphere which i love so much. Wewere amaze by the unique building of the ryokan, it was 150years old (if i wasn't mistaken), builded 2 generations earlier. Oh i'm too lazy... More

Pat12b-san, Wow! I'm glad you and your father enjoyed our inn so much. No one knows for sure how old our original building is. It was disassembled and moved here over 70 years ago from a nearby post town. It started out as an okiya (geisha house) and has been added on to since then. Across the koi pond and... More
