If you're trying to get a flavor for old Japan, a stay at Iseya is a must. We were the only westerners at this lovely inn. Our room looked onto a garden (ask for a room in the building behind the garden). The food was delicious and they were very friendly and helpful (even speaking some English). While not the... More

In November we walked a few parts of the Nakasendo Trail - the old post route between Edo and Kyoto. Before crossing the Torji Pass we stayed at Narai for one night. Narai is a small village along the main road an most of the buildings are left as they had been when the post road was the only connection between... More

We stayed one night at this very pleasant and well-situated minshuku. The room and the communal facilities were very clean and the family-style shared baths were very nice ones. The food was excellent. Some English is spoken and the owner is friendly and helpful.

It consists of the main house with the reception and I believe some rooms upstairs. The second house is at the back of the garden, my room was on the first floor of this house.... More

My wife and I stayed at the Iseya during a trip to Narai. Had not stayed at a minshuku before and it was a contrast to a ryokan. The Iseya was welcoming, and we were given a good orientation to the routines of the minshuku. Our room was a six mat room, which is small, but typical of a minshuku.... More

We had a very pleasant stay, the owners made us feel so welcome and a party of Japanese weekenders made a fuss of us as well. The meals were excellant and the village itself was very peaceful. Don't miss it!
