We were there in late august 2014. We had taken the Shinkansen from Tokyo to Mairaba then another train to Kanazawa in the morning, picked up our rental car around 2PM and drove to Wajima\ Notonosho after stopping at two temples/shrines and a short drive on the beach (fun) at Chirihama. What defines the Onsen / ryokan experience in my mind: a whiff of fresh tatami mat smell, an elegant interior, uncluttered by commercialism ,the fresh flower arrangements in corners, on coffee tables. If you like a nice Kaiseki after an Onsen, this is one of THE places to do it! at 28K yen per person per night, it is good value for money after you take into consideration the excellent dinner and breakfast.
