there were many positive elements to this ryokan on kashikojima even on a mid-winter visit. Overall, it was a relaxing and enjoyable secluded luxury and gourmet experience, but it comes with a price tag that is not necessarily justified by the service and facilities offered (I'm afraid that a free mini-bar does not make up for that ...) and hence,... Basaratei ryokan is superlative. The rooms are beautiful - from the cathedral ceiling, futon bed and tatami floor to the timber bathing room, atmospheric lighting and private hot tub on a balcony overlooking the bay. My wife, who is Japanese and knows a thing or two, considered this a terrible experience, and wanted to rate it as such with one star. Basaratei is an amazing onsen, or hot spring. In a country where hot springs are widespread, this is definitely a high-end place (which is reflected in the price).
