We wanted a private on-sen and was a bit disappointed on the first day since the water did not look clean. I guess they cleaned up after the room was last used but since it was an outdoor on-sen, small flies and dust/dirt got into the water when the room was unused. The decor and guest events probably reveal the age of the owners/managers and therefore attracts similar generation people more but I'd say it's definitely worth a try if you're in the area looking for the classic... Kurofune is like a 1960s Rat Pack favorite hotel, if they had ever come to Shimoda, Japan. But with time, its glamor is fading a bit. Not run down, but it's a big hotel that requires a lot of upkeep and some updating, and they almost, but don't quite, do so. Still, comfortable, large Japanese style rooms with a nice... More
