We booked for Sunday lunch in the bistro, knowing that it was going to be busy. However, we were disappointed to find that they had run out of roast beef, leaving only a pork roast as a roast dinner. The starters were fine, although I don't agree that beetroot adds much to smoked salmon - apart from colour. When the... More

Recommended by my guest house. I ate in the bistro, apparently they their closing the fine dining establishment at the time! I can see why, the bistro was really great , food fresh and tasty with local flavors, reasonably priced and service was great if a little noisy. Wonderful atmosphere and the decor, small lounges were what a country coach... More

The Pheasant isn't bad, it just isn't 'all that' and has the feel of somewhere trading on its past reputation. The place itself is lovely, but as a customer I hate that sense of somehow feeling I should be privileged to be there. I think £7.50 is a bit dear for an open, ie single slice of bread, sandwich, but... More

Spent a night there and introduced my family to a boyhood haunt....they say never go back yet in this case it was an excellent idea. The food in the Bistro was excellent....a wonderful experience. The weather was poor yet the lovely fire in the lounge was warm and toasty. Very inviting.

My husband and I went to The Pheasant Inn for a weekend stay over the Christmas holidays. We had a wonderful time, the staff were amazingly helpful but not too intrusive which is just what we wanted! The bar was beautiful with all its old features and characteristics. The bar maid was very helpful and was able to assist us... More

Lodge rooms smelt damp and musty. Make sure you book an evening meal as they do not guarantee residents a table. Staff very attentive food excellent.Very cosy lounges with roaring log fires just what you need on a cold wet February day.

Overall a fantastic short stay. The hotel is full of old world charm and our superior room (Ennerdale) was absolutely lovely. We both thought the young staff were excellent both in attitude and knowledge. They even sell cigarettes behind the bar ( I know this will be of little interest to many but it is quite an unusual and welcome... More

Not a staying guest. Just a lunchtime meal , but a truly delicious Barnsley chop with trimmings (like madhouse with puy lentils and deliciously freshly-chopped mint sauce - delicious!). Even the fish and chips were excellent - the lightest, crispest batter was memorable. A pint in the comfy snug bar - 3 local ales on tap - and seated in... More

Wonderful old style coaching inn. Rooms are very comfortable and clean. Legendary bar. Two great options for dinner a bistro and a formal restaurant both of which serve outstanding food. A breakfast upon which you can walk all day. Staff are all very friendly and helpful. Overall a great base with a welcome home atmosphere - especially after a long... More
