Overview:
The French Trail Loop is about 7.9 miles long and located near Oakland, California. The trail is great for hiking and normally takes a ... more »half day. We parked at the Canyon Meadow Staging Area off of Redwood Rd near the intersection of Pinehurst Rd.
Start off on the paved road running past the bathrooms (visible from the lot) and continue on the pavement for approx 1/2 mile and cross the bridge over Redwood Creek. Turn right on Stream Trail which runs along a nicely wooded area next to the creek. The next couple of miles are beautiful next to the creek and gently rising until you come to Girl's Camp Area. At this point, there is a bit of a climb up to the Skyline Gate Staging Area where there are bathrooms and benches.
Now turn sharp left on West Ridge Trail which is level and takes you to the French Trail intersection. Turn left on French Trail and starts a descent into the most scenic area of the park. The trail runs into a thick growth of redwoods for the next couple of miles. Pay attention to the signs when arriving at the Fern Trail intersection. Turn right here for about 75 feet before turning back left on French Trail.
Continue on French Trail straight past the Chown Trail intersection. The next intersection is Orchard Trail where you turn left and descend down to Redwood Creek. Turn left on Bridle Trail and take it to the bridge over Redwood Creek and turn right back to the parking lot less «
