The Church of San Blas is found in the barrio of the same name. Inside you can find the famous and symbolic pulpit, made from a single piece of wood nearly 400 years ago. Close to the Church workshops and shops have been developed by artisans and artists. The most famous artisans from Cusco are the Mendívils, creators of the multicolored and emblem... Moreatic archangels. Other families still present in the barrio, and of equal prestige include the Olave and the Mérida families, followed by those of the Aguayo, Aguilar, Álvarez, Segovia, Saloma and Gutiérrez families, amongst others.

San Blas is known as the "District of the Artisans", with narrow and winding streets. In the times of the Incas, it was one of the most important districts in Cusco and its name was "T´oqo-kachi". T´oqo means hollow in the native language of Quechua, whilst kachi means salt. The district, like others, was inhabited by the Quechua nobility.

It is widely believed that the Church of San Blas was constructed over a sacred Inca sanctuary of the "Illapa" cult, which worshipped the God of Thunder and Lightning. It was possible opened for the first time in 1544 by the second Bishop Juan Solano. Other reports state that it was opened by Viceroy Andrés Hurtado in 1559. It withstood the earthquakes of 1650 and 1950 as a result of that was partially reinforced with stone walls.

En su interior se encuentra un famoso y simbólico púlpito, bellamente tallado en madera de una sola pieza hace casi 400 años. Cerca de la iglesia se desarrollan talleres y tiendas de artistas y artesanos. Los más famosos artesanos cusqueños son los Mendívil, creadores de los multicolores y emblemáticos arcángeles de cuellos largos, hechos en pasta y madera y conocidos mundialmente. San Blas es conocido como el "Distrito de los Artistas", con las calles estrechas y retorcidas. En los tiempos incaicos era uno de los distritos más importantes del Cusco y su nombre era "T'oqo-kachi" (T'oqo = hondonada; kachi = sal). Como otros distritos estaba habitado por la nobleza quechua.

Se cree que la Iglesia de San Balas se construyó sobre un Santuario Inca consagrado al culto del "Illapa" (Dios del trueno, relámpago y rayo). Posiblemente se abrió por primera vez en 1544 por el segundo Obispo Juan Solano. Aunque algunas otras versiones dicen que fue abierto después de 1559 por el virrey Andrés Hurtado de la orden de Mendoza. A soportado los terremotos en 1650 y 1950 a raíz de eso se reforzó parcialmente con paredes de piedra.

Hatunrumiyoq is familiar to many because it is here that you encounter the palace of Inka Roca, built with stones of green diorite in a polygonal style that covers much of Hatunrumiyoc Street. It also has a colonial-style overlay, which is now part of the Archbishop's Palace (Museum of Art), with a perimeter of 190 meters surrounding the pla... Moretform. The platform exhibits the ability of the carvers is particular aesthetic.

At the center of the wall lies the stone of twelve angles, famous for the perfect assembly of its corners with the surrounding stones.

The retaining wall is a formidable assembly displaying polygonal stones, which the Incas were renowned for using to build retentive walls.

Se caracteriza Hatunrumiyoq por que en ella se encuentra el palacio de Inka Roca, construido con piedras de diorita verde, de estilo poligonal que abarca gran parte de la calle Hatunrumiyoc, tiene una superposición de estilo colonial y republicano, que actualmente forma parte del Palacio Arzobispal (Museo de Arte), queda un perímetro de 190 metros circundando el andén, la misma que exhibe la habilidad de los talladores del imperio y su particular estética.

Al centro del muro se ubica la piedra de los doce ángulos, famosa por el perfecto ensamblaje de sus esquinas y lados con las demás piedras.
El muro de contención es una formidable muestra del ensamblaje poligonal de las piedras; que los incas utilizaron para construir muros de sostén.

The Iglesia del Triunfo dates to 1539 and is now part of the cathedral which is one of the impressive focal points of the Plaza. It was built on the foundations of the Palace of Inca Viracocha.

Church and Convent of Santa Catalina – Acllahuasi

The convent was reconstructed in 1653 and the church itself dates from 1669. Both was constructed over the Acllahuasi. The Chapel exhibits beautiful Baroque architecture and has a museum of religious and colonial art located on the corner of St. Catherine Angosta and Loreto. The Acllah... Moreuasi (Quechua house of the chosen), or Temple of the Virgins, was the where the acllas dwelt. The acllas were woman chosen for their lineage and beauty, who were offered as wives to the eternal sun god Inti. Only the Inca (King), Coya (Queen) and Ñustas (Princesses) could enter this temple, which at one time permanently housed between 500 and 1000 acllas.

El actual convento fue reconstruido en 1,653 y la iglesia data de 1,669. Construidos sobre el Acllahuasi. Capilla de hermosa arquitectura barroca, posee un museo religioso y de arte colonial; ubicado en la esquina de las calles Santa Catalina Angosta y Loreto. El Acllahuasi(voz quechua casa de las escogidas), o Templo de las Vírgenes, era el lugar incaico en el cual moraban a perpetuidad las acllas (mujer escogida por su linaje y hermosura, ofrecidas como eternas esposas del dios Inti - el sol). En este templo sólo podían ingresar la Coya(reina) y las Ñustas (princesas) y el rey Inca; habitaban en forma permanente entre 500 y 1000 acllas.

Continuing down Arequipa, you turn left onto Calle Maruri. Here you find a branch of Scotiabank which has a small but interesting museum showing both contemporary art and archaeological pieces from the region.

The Cusicancha or Old Palace of Pachacútec is also located in this street. The recovery of the enclosure is particularly impor... Moretant because it is a key part of Inca urban design, and the chroniclers report that the great monarch Pachacútec was born there.

Carrillo Cusicancha Rosell claims that "We are in one of the most important environments Cusco because there still remains the original urban form." He refers to the temple as part of Qorikancha (now known as the Convent of Santo Domingo) which not only allows us to recover the value it had Pachacutec's time, but also to discover the true urban design of the Incas´ Imperial City.

The project aims to attract the eyes of the tourists to the modern architecture linked to the former with large windows that allow the passerby to admire from outside a small fortress of streets, precincts, ceremonial fountains, just as it was in the urban ancient Inca Empire.

En esta calle tambien se encuentra el Cusicancha - Antiguo palacio de Pachacútec. Este es uno de los palacios que levantó el inca Pachacútec. La recuperación del recinto adquiere particular importancia porque es parte del diseño urbano inca, y los Cronistas afirman que allí nació el gran monarca.


"Estamos en uno de los ambientes más importantes del Cusco porque aquí todavía se mantiene el trazo urbano original", afirma Carrillo Rosell al referirse al Cusicancha que forma parte del templo del Coricancha (hoy conocido como convento de Santo Domingo).

No solo se recuperará el valor que tuvo el palacio de Pachacútec, sino que se descubrirá el verdadero diseño urbano de la Ciudad Imperial.
El proyecto busca atraer los ojos de los turistas sobre la arquitectura moderna ligada a la antigua con grandes ventanales que permitirán, incluso al transeúnte, admirar desde afuera una pequeña ciudadela llena de calles, recintos, fuentes ceremoniales, tal como era la traza urbana en el antiguo Imperio de los Incas.

The Qorikancha was the most important Inca temple, the Temple of Inti (the supreme Sungod). It was the jewel of Inca architecture, built on granite blocks carved with molten gold in the joints of the blocks. Inside the temple there was a garden in which the trees, birds and animals, were all represented in gold. The temple was surrounded by a crown... More of gold, and all the walls covered in gold plates. In the sanctuary there was a big gold record (Punchau) representing Inti. The mummies of the Inca kings up to Huayna Capac (the 12th King) were presented sitting in chairs and wearing gold jewelry, as if alive.

Annexes to Coricancha were the temples of Quilla (moon), Illapa (beam), the stars, and the accommodation for the Chuychu Uíllac Umu (high priest). On arrival of the Spanish conquistadors, the Qorikancha was half destroyed by savage looting. To banish the worship of Inti, the Spanish built the Catholic church of Santo Domingo on top of the Inca temple.

All Inca roads in the entirety of Tahuantinsuyo converged at the Coricancha, making it the central point of the Inca empire.

Coricancha – Koricancha (recinto de oro)

Fue el principal templo incaico, el Templo de Inti (el dios supremo - el sol), es una joya de la arquitectura Inca, construida en bloques de granito tallado y oro derretido en las junturas de los bloques. Dentro del templo existía un jardín en el que los árboles, aves, animales, etc. estaban representados en oro.

El templo estaba circundado de una cornisa de oro y todas las paredes forradas en planchas de oro. En el santuario existió un gran disco de oro (Punchau) que representaba a Inti, las momias de los reyes Incas hasta Huayna Cápac (12° rey) estaban sentados en sillas de oro y ataviados de joyas, con expresión de estar vivos.
Anexos al Coricancha, se encontraban los templos de Quilla (luna), Illapa (rayo), las estrellas, Chuychu y los alojamientos de Uíllac Umu (sacerdote supremo). A la llegada de los conquistadores españoles fue saqueado salvajemente y fue semidestruido para desterrar la veneración a Inti, y sobre él se edificó el templo católico de Santo Domingo.

Todos los caminos incaicos del Tahuantinsuyo convergían en el Coricancha, además de ser el punto central de la división administrativa del imperio, y donde nacían y convergían los 4 suyos.

Calle Loretto is also called the Intikijllu or Sun alley and is a narrow street leading to the Plaza de Armas of Cusco.

The route corresponds to the outer passage of what was the walled enclosure of Amaru Kancha and Acllawasi. The Inca architects needed considerable skill to cut and adjust the blocks which make up the walls with a cer... Moretain inclination. The horizontal rows of blocks and vertical separation of sizes decrease in size from the regular sizes at the base to smaller blocks on top.

Its name comes from the association of the Chapel of Our Lady of Loreto, built in the colonial era.

Denominada también Intikijllu o callejón del Sol. Se trata de la calle angosta que conduce del sector Este hacia la Plaza de Armas del Cusco, corresponde al pasadizo exterior de lo que fueron los recintos amurallados del Amaru Kancha y Acllawasi. En este se aprecia el dominio de los arquitectos incas para cortar y ajustar los sillares al edificar los muros, dotando de cierta inclinación, la horizontalidad de las hileras de sillares y la separación vertical de tamaños que van de tamaños regulares en la base para culminar con sillares de menores dimensiones en la parte superior adoptando el sistema decreciente, buscando ciertos efectos visuales para indicar una preocupación estética vinculada a las normas de identificación arquitectónica.

Su nombre proviene de la asociación de la Capilla de Nuestra Señora de Loreto, construida en la época colonial.

Today the Plaza de Armas occupies the same place as the Plaza Huacaypata (Quechua for “groan” or “sorry”) that was created by Manco Capac whilst founding the city of Cusco in the twelfth century. Later, the royal palaces of the Inca kings Pachacutec, Sinchiroca, Viracocha , Tupac Yupanqui, Huayna Capac and the Acllahuasi (Temple of the Virgins) wer... Moree built around it. La plaza principal del Cusco ocupa el mismo lugar que la Plaza Huacaypata (voz quechua, quejido, lamento) que fue trazada por Manco Cápac al fundar la ciudad de Cusco en el siglo XII, en torno a ella construyeron los palacios reales los reyes incas Pachacútec, Sinchi Roca, Viracocha, Túpac Yupanqui, Huayna Cápac y el Acllahuasi (Templo de las Vírgenes). Era el lugar en donde se celebraba el Inti Raymi en tiempo de los Incas, las fiestas militares luego del triunfo en batalla. Desde la llegada de los españoles fue algo disminuida en sus dimensiones por las construcciones perimétricas, y que hoy perduran, como la Catedral, la Iglesia de la Compañía, los portales, arquerías y casonas.
