Spend the day along Potomac river trails and on a colonial farm all within an hour of each other in Virginia and Maryland!
Start your... more » day at Meadowood Conservatory in Lorton, VA which is an active forest management and rehabilitation area. Youll find many girlscout projects there, and possibly some equestrian users also as you walk along the forested trails. The loop trails are various and involve pond views along a well maintained trail system. A GPS is suggested to follow our route at there arent any trail maps available.
Next head over to Mason Neck state park in Lorton, Viginia (10 minutes away!). This hike is pretty flat and has a great beach to walk along right on the Potomac river. Youll find Eagle nests, and many other birds here. The beach is a great place to have a packed lunch, this park is normally empty even during the summer months. Its easy to stroll down the beach to find your own little area to have lunch with your family.
The Last leg goes up SR 1 (Davis highway) towards Alexandria, then over the bridge and down into Indian Head to Piscataway state park. The state park has Accokeek farms which is a working colonial farm. There is a unique 5 mile trail around the perimeter and through the fields that makes for a very nice walk. There are some artifacts to be found in this area as an old antique bottle was found dating back approx 40-50 years! There are livestock here still, horses, cows, and goats. End your hiking and farm adventure on the water at the fishing pier on the Potomac and watch the sunset. There is also a sheltered picnic area on the water to have a BBQ.
