The Dearborn Inn - a charming historic property about 15 minutes from downtown. Individual 'cottages' that replicate Colonial guest homes. Across the street from The Henry Ford.

  • 2. Where to stay in the area

A five-star hotel in Rochester - about one hour north of Detroit.

  • 3. Where to stay
    http://www.townsendhotel.com/

European elegance tucked into downtown Birmingham. Interesting shopping and dining within a few minutes walk.

  • 4. Sports...sports... and more sports!

You name it - we've got it!

Major league baseball, basketball, WNBA, football and hockey. Two minor league hockey teams and the Toledo Mud Hens minor league baseball. Did I say we love sports here?

  • 5. Culture, too!
    http://www.dia.org/

The Detroit Institute of Arts, founded in 1885, is one of the top museums in the nation. Currently undergoing a major construction and renovation, the DIA offers late hours on Friday nights. The DIA is also home to the Detroit Film Theatre.

  • 6. More culture!
    http://www.detroitsymphony.com/main.taf?erube_fh=dso&dso.submit.viewHo...

Founded in 1914, the DSO is internationally acclaimed and performs in historic Orchestra Hall, part of the Max M. Fisher Music Center.

  • 7. The Henry Ford - America's Greatest History Attraction
    The Henry Ford, Dearborn, Michigan

You can easily spend 2-3 days exploring all that The Henry Ford has to offer. Whether you explore the Henry Ford Museum (don't miss the Dymaxion House), watch an IMAX film, take the Rouge Steel tour or explore the transplanted buildings of Greenfield Village, there will be something for everyone.

  • 8. Festivals and lots of 'em!

Outdoor festivals of all types - Budweiser Hoedown, Movement: Detroit Electronic Music Festival, TasteFest, Concert of Colors, Dally in the Alley, Festival of the Arts, International Freedom Festival, Windsor Blues Festival, Arts Beats & Eats, Ann Arbor Blues & Jazz Festival, Ford-Montreaux Jazz Festival (or whatever it's now called) - just to name the obvious!

Seriously - there are so many great festivals in and around Detroit during the spring and summer. Many offer FREE music with national acts. I never go out of town over the holidays - I might miss something!

  • 9. Faygo Pop - not soda, pop!
    http://www.faygo.com/

Try a hometown favorite - Faygo Rock-n-Rye or Redpop - along with a bag of Better Made Potato Chips.

  • 10. Windsor, Ontario

Don't forget to bring your birth certificate and visit WIndsor. Good eats in Little Italy and the best view of downtown Detroit from the beautiful waterfront parks. You can say you visited a foreign country.
