Absolute must in Munich. The spirit of Munich's history embodied in a mix of old and new, this place screams Europe! Bavaria! For the first-time visitor nothing makes you feel more like you have arrived than a visit to Marienplatz. Make sure to shop, eat, and see the sights. At Christmas time, the famous Munich Christkindlmarkt is here! Old Churches and Cathedrals, civic buildings, shops and stores, this massive cobblestone plaza also has the Glockenspiel.
2. Old Pinakothek (Alte Pinakothek)
Fantastic, world-class art museum. Da Vinci, Boticelli, Rubens, Raphael, Rembrandt, van Dyck, you name it! Fantastic. Oldest known Da Vinci, and the worlds largest oil on canvas, a stunning Rubens work! Make time for this museum with over 700 paintings and each one worth quiet study.
3. New Pinakothek (Neue Pinakothek)
Like the Alte Pinakothek, the Neue Pinakothek is an incredible art journey! Gainsborough, Goya, Manet, Cezanne, Van Gogh, Monet, Munch, and many many more. The Munich art museums are major part of the art world. Don't let yourself miss out!
4. Staatliches Hofbrauhaus
You can't go to Munich and not have at least one meal at the world famous Hofbrauhaus. Just make sure you have no other plans that evening. You'll spend the whole time there whether you plan on it or not!
5. Nymphenburg Palace (Schloss Nymphenburg)
The grounds are gorgeous. In winter they're sheer magic. Fountains and waterways, gigantic palace. The visit inside is worth it for the entryway alone.
6. Church of Our Lady (Frauenkirche)
The iconic twin domes of Frauenkirche are one of the most recognizable symbols of Munich. The interior is equally fantastic, famous for having no window views from the interior, although filled with light from the outside. Don't miss the legendary "Devil's Footprint" and climb to the top of the south tower for incredible views!
The gorgeous and massive architecture of Odeonsplatz must not be missed. And if you walk from here to Marienplatz you not only see some of the great buildings of Munich, but some of the finest shopping in the city, including exotic cars and designer clothing.
Fantastic Bavarian dining experience. As the name suggests, this restaurant is in the cellar of the old Rathaus. My personal favorite, make sure to order potato pancakes, and the wienerschnitzel ist sehr gut! Do not miss out!
