Chilling out in amsterdam

Dec 11, 2006  regular tourist and enthusiast of the city
4.5 of 5 stars based on 5 votes

A quick list of my views on the essential places to go for a chilled out few days in amsterdam whether it be for eating, drinking, or smoking.

  • Category: Perfect weekend
  • 1. Barney's Lounge

Coffeshop - Relaxing little coffeeshop on the Reguliersgracht with leather seats and a dark noir atmosphere, close to Rembrantplein, my all time favourite place to chill out in the city. Great staff and sells fantastic goods. Doesn't sell food or alcohol but the hot drinks and soft drinks are not overpriced. Big plasma screen on the wall showing muted films with english subtitles. Open til 3am.

  • 2. Onder De Ooievaar

Bar/Brown Cafe - On the corner of Prinsengracht and Utrechtsestraat. Cosy little bar selling great beers and snacks such as toasted sandwiches. Very local with great views of the prinsengracht.

  • 3. Maoz Falafel

Middle Eastern Take Out - Outlets dotted all over the city but my favourite is on the Leidseplein. It's the best falafel in town with an all you can eat salad bar and is my favorite meal on the go. If you want falafel get maoz. Other locations are near the albert cuyp, central station (stationsplein), and Reguliersbreestraat off the rembrantplein.

  • 4. Spui

Square - The city's best square by a mile, just off the Singel. More local orientated and less seedy than dam square but close by. It's very enclosed and full of little shops and cafe's and has many little alleys coming off it which hide some of Amsterdams best coffeshops and bars. Also, perfect to sit and eat some Vlaames Frites or a Maoz, lots of benches and places to sit. Main roads leading off Spui bring you out at Rokin, Dam Square, Singel and Muntplein areas.

  • 5. Greenhouse Tolstraat

Coffeeshop - Nice coffeshop south of centrum in a residential area south of the Albert Cuyp (take tram 4 and alight at the stop after the Albert Cuyp market). Sells alcohol and the smoke is supposed to be fantastic but each time i've been i've taken my own, great atmosphere though.

  • 6. Bagels and Beans

Coffeehouse/Cafe - There are a couple of locations of this famous bagel outlet in the city but my favorite is on the Waterlooplein and is my personal hangout for a long relaxing breakfast. This particular shop faces the hustle and bustle of the market outside and it is great for people watching. Again, a very local place but try the onion bagel with farmers ham and creamcheese. Amazing.

  • 7. Stix

Coffeeshop - Very local little hang out that sells well priced and good quality merchandise. Big windows to watch the crowds of locals cycling up and down the Utrechtsestraat. My fave hangout for a chilled out smoke after a great meal, not a place to sit in for long as their are comfier places but for atmosphere it cant be beaten. Not many tourists here either which is great.

  • 8. La Delize

Deli - On the Vijzelstraat close the Prinsengracht. I dont go here as ofen as i should but the few times I have been it has been great. The food is displayed behind the counter and choose what you want and you can take out or eat in. If you eat in they will heat it up and bring it to your table. The lasagne is huge and delicious. There is also a salad bar which is varied but quite expensive. Perfect if you want a sit down meal without any fuss. There are lots of road works here so keep your eyes peeled as you may just miss it.

  • 9. Abraxas

Coffeeshop - On a tiny little alley just off the Nieuwezijds Voorburgwal (there's a neon signpost telling you where it is. Big tourist spot but catch it at a quiet time like I always seem to do and there a plenty of comfy places to sit and lounge. The place has three floors each with a different design.

  • 10. Australian

Ice Cream Parlour / Coffeehouse - Its like starbucks but with Ice Cream. Various locations across the city but my favorite is opposite McDonalds on the Leidesplein. Sell great quality ice cream, waffles, chocolates and coffees. Inexpensive and worth indulging in.

  • 11. Dutch Flowers

Coffeeshop - On the singel facing a nice shopping street. Very close to the Spui. It's like a little brown cafe but it's a coffeeshop. Try and get the table in the big bay window it's perfect for watching the world go by. Friendly staff and a relaxed chilled out vibe. What more could you want?

  • 12. Cafe Luxemburg

Cafe - I love this little cafe on the Spui facing the square. Great menu of omelettes and croquettes and does a nice hamburger (ask for it well done or it will come very very rare!)
