Walking and Shopping in Montreal

May 1, 2006  Montreal native speaks out!
2.5 of 5 stars based on 2 votes

For shopping enthusiats, who will enjoy all the different shopping districts/streets that the city has to offer.

  • Category: Walking tour
  • 1. Rue St. Catherine's in Downtown Montreal

A street lined for miles with boutiques and restaurants and malls like Le Faubourg (at Guy St.) The Eaton Center (Peel St.), Olgilvys (Drummond St.), Place Montreal Trust (McGill St.), Les Cathedrales and much more!!!!!!!!! Start at Rue Guy and walk east until St.Laurent Blvd. Also, check out all the sidestreets inbetween for interesting finds.

  • 2. St. Laurent Boulevard, Monteal

Heading North (up St. Laurent): Continuing from St. Catherine's after a view of Montreal's most famous club Foufounes Electrique right on the corner of St. Catherine and St.Laurent. Now head up St. Laurent and pop in at some of the thrift shops. There's not that much to look at here so just keep walking until you reach Sherbrooke St., and now you about to enter into the plateau area and the hippest part of town with lots of trendy cafes, restaurants, boutiques and clubs, so keep walking up St. Laurent Blvd because the fun doesn't end here. Take a lunch break on pretty Prince Arthur Street with it's cobblestones and then head back out onto St. Laurent Blvd, visiting more and more up the street of St.Laurent or cut through Carre St. Louis (park at the end of Prince Arthur) to St. Denis Street.

Heading South (down St. Laurent): Heading south on St. Laurent Blvd. will take you to Chinatown and Old Montreal. Both very popular tourist areas. You'll see the massive entrance structure to Chinatown right at the corner of St. Laurent and Rene Levesque Blvds. Chinatown isn't very big but has a few streets so enjoy yourself for a little while in the shops there and don't forget to sample a few chinese pastries along your walk. If you head south and a couple blocks west of chinatown, you'll enter into Old Montreal and here you must go visit the breathtaking Notre Dame Cathedrale. And then explore all the cobblestone streets in this oldest section of the city.

  • 3. Rue St. Denis

This is the more artistic francophone section of Montreal. Lined with old buildings so marvel at the architecture as well as visit all the cool boutiques and cafes and hip record stores like "Primitive" and "Beatnik" along this street. Follow this street up to Rue Mont Royal and turn east or west. East heads you further and further into local french neighborhoods, while west will bring you right back to St. Laurent Boulevard. If you don't want to head all the way up to Rue Mont Royal you can do the same at Rue Duluth, and experince more interesting architecture and cobblestone streets.
