1. Margaritas Hotel Cancun

Ave price:
$85

Great budget option! My biggest secret is to book a bed in the penthouse suite for $12 on a hostel site. |

Another great budget option with decent pool. |

3. Parque Las Palapas
| Local families stroll the park every night of the week, especially during weekends. Browse through crafts, food vendors, people watch and sometimes shows for children. |

4. Taco Joints and Local Vendors

I love the little outdoor places where you watch the meat get sliced from the spit and different salsas on the table. Look for a spot filled with locals.
Close to the park, a family sells food from a stand in their front yard, tables on the "lawn" and homemade salsas.
I am not afraid to eat from street vendors. I talked with a tamal vendor, he makes everything fresh each night and sells out by 11am. At those AI buffets, food sits out and is served the next day if not eaten. Never been sick. Most of the stories I hear about illness are from tourist-trap restaurants or AI buffets. |

5. Hop on the Bus!
Air conditioned buses, many with TV's, run a direct route, several times an hour, from the Airport to the downtown Cancun bus station and vice versa. Tickets are sold at a ADO booth in the airport or outside the terminal by the bus. From downtown to the beach it's about 80 cents. From the airport to Playa Del Carmen $8, downtown Cancun to PDC $3.50. |

6. Sabor Latino
A HOT Salsa Club that fills with locals after midnight to hear live salsa, merengue and such. Skilled dancers are fun to watch but there is plenty of room for beginners. Dress to impress and wear your dancing shoes! Av. Cobá Sm 35, at Plaza Hong Kong Short taxi ride is safest option. |

7. Downtown info
Downtown Cancun is a bustling, concrete city that attracts budget travelers wanting to be close to the beach without breaking the bank and sleep cheap before or after a flight. Several hotels, bars and restaurants line Yaxchilan Ave and the side street off Tulum Ave. If you are looking for a smaller party scene with a local flair, check out this area. If you want to be closer to the beach, head to Isla Mujeres or Tulum. Bargains can be found everywhere. For salsa dancing head to Sabor Latino or Mambo Cafe.
Stop by the Chedrauli supermarket at Tulum and Coba to stock up on supplies before hopping the bus to the beach.
As a single, woman traveler I felt safe walking alone, even at night. Take precautions as you would in any city. |
